Kitesurfing waves in July/August

Postby KiteRunner » Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:59 pm

We're looking for a good spot to go for 10 days around July and August. We need big waves, and consistent wind.

Have already been to Brazil 3 times. (North) and kitesurfed all over Combucu, Parakuru, and Jeri.

Looking for a different location.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

I am Irish so I am probably a little biased

Brandon bay Kerry, Ireland. Follow the link and get in touch with Ryan, ex Irish wave riding champion. The location and conditions are great, big Atlantic swell. Consider it as an option.

Are condition there good in the summer, and is that water warm?

Hi Kite runner, the Atlantic is not warm in my opinion as I am Med based but there is no problem with temperature if you get your wet suit on. Normal practice for prolonged kiting. The waves are epic and in Brandon bay the topography allows you to kite with almost any wind direction. On the other side of the penisula you have a huge beach called Inch beach. It allows you to kite the remaining wind directions and is not far away. I also highly recomend land kiting when the tide is out. The beach is miles long and sparcely populated even in summer. The waves are very orderly and you have enough space between them to recover if you wipe out. The only thing to look out for are the currents. Any of the locals can clue you in and show you the safe spots. The cultural setting is awsome and you have towns like Dingle, which is a gem and lots doing there.

Good winds...

P.S. My sister has a house for rent there. http://kerryhouseforrent.com/

Sri lanka yes, Thailand is not an option unless you are looking for a kite spot that has lady boys instead of waves.

Medano in Tenerife gets consistent winds in June to August.

Cabezo is a windsurfing reef. Its small and in front of rocks, and the windsurfers aren't keen on kiters messing up their small spot.

el Muelle has slightly smaller waves and is the easiest spot and tends to get shared by windsurfers and kiters so gets crowded.

The PKRA event was held at a point in between the others which was very rarely used before then. You could be washed up on rocks or to Muelle but if you were good enough, it should be the least busy location.

The photo shows the locations and the vids are at the PKRA spot.

C'mon Stefan, he said that he is looking for big waves... Sri Lanka has a couple of nice flat-water lagoons so if that was what he was looking for Sri Lanka would be right on target. :thumb: But the waves are short-distance, wind-driven, short-period waves in a generally messy ocean. On a good day you might get 1m to 1.5m waves on which you might be able to do a couple of bottom turns, but I think he is looking for more than that.

Also, about 100% consistent wind... You know that there ain't no such thing. :) In Sri Lanka in July and August in the last couple of years, there have been entire weeks of no wind even in Kalpitiya on the west coast which is one of the windiest places in Sri Lanka. And if he wants any decent chance of good waves he would have to head south in Sri Lanka, and there the wind is much less consistent.

Kiterunner, can you delay your trip by a month, to August or later? In that case I would head to Sumbawa in Indonesia for big, clean, well-organized waves with long periods. :cool2: Boardshort temperature of the air and water.
