Why are pump bases flat?

The flat base of a pump is so awkward when trying to pump a kite up. Maybe a slanted base - either toward or away from you would make more sense.

yea thats weird about all pumps r flat on the bottom,....
one thing i know is that the ones w/aluminum shafts are SH!T!
