corpus christi is pretty cheap, but not in the same league as say the philippines.

You can eat for about $2/day in the philippines (less if you are in the provinces). You can rent for a year for like $3000.

This topic reminds me of what I've seen yesterday at Barra do Cunhaú - RN - Brazil: some gringo (either north american or european... don't know) selling kitesurfing sunglasses at the beach. Going door to door and asking if anybody wanted sunglasses... And worst: selling them for triple the price (looked just like maelstorm and selling for $70!!!)! It was something absurd, that doesn't fit the picture you have from a place. The same thing as going to Cancun and seeing americans selling stuff on the beach... Just something you don't picture.

Seriously, brazilian beaches are a place of leisure for foreigners... Not to make a life out of it... Please, leave that for brazilians who are really needy. Come here to spend your money (a lot or not that much, but spend it!) and don't become a bum wandering around a beach.

And, yes, brazilians are very hospitable...

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but we eat very well and drink well for very cheap here in South Africa.

Not to plug (although I know your rolling your eyes at me already) I run a kitesurfing centre here that puts a roof over your head, gives you breakfast every morning and gives you the run of Langebaan (the best flat water location I've ever been to) during the day, and a house full of partying kitesurfers at night!

Don't wanna start an endless discussion here about immigration, regulations, poverty, economics or whatever. Sorry, poools... Didn't want to offend you. Just telling you guys something I'd never imagine to see here in Brazil. Just picture yourself in Cancun and someone you'd expect to be a tourist, travelling and having a good time is actually doing the same stuff as the most needy locals do. Well, anyways, thanks about the "spics". I've never heard that before and now I know what it is.

By the way, you guys should start exploring some places besides Cumbuco, Jeri, Fortaleza etc. Come to Natal and visit São Miguel do Gostoso / Galinhos and Barra do Cunhaú / Pipa... You won't regret it!

It sure is, it's full of these tiny little fish that look like mini sharks, hence the name of the fish 'sand shark' and the name of the lagoon..
Don't be thrown off though, there isn't anything dangerous in the lagoons

Jamaica can be cheap to live depending on HOW you live , and we got wind all year round , north coast rips 20+ kts nov-may , south coast may-sept .... north coast can be all year , depends on the low pressure systems passing thru the caribbean stealing the air

How about on a sailboat? Lot's of people are sailing the world living on their boats for less than $1,500 a month.
