Some years ago I saw a "spreader rope" with a sliding shackle.
The cheap shackle didn't need to be a safety release,
because the primary release was still the standard chicken loop.

Does anybody have a do it yourself design,
that provides a simple and effective sliding mechanism?

Its not that much cheaper though than buying the Dynabar rope system.

Why only 6 inches of travel. Why not give it the same travel as the Dynabar?

the absence of a frame will allow the line to choke your waist under load.. IMO not a desirable thing to happen. you can prove it for yourself if you get n the water and send your kite into a kiteloop while body dragging. It's also possible the rope will spin and make the "touniquet" effect around your waist even worse so be careful.
