Any time between 0700hrs and 2200Hrs, when the urge strikes me.
Daytime wear your total UV protection, nightime wear some kind of thermal protection.

From October to April (ie Spring-Summer-Autumn)
- weeknights every evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm (sometimes 6:00-8:00 pm)
- weekends 2:00-4:00 pm

From May-September
- weekends 2:00-4:00 pm
- one or two mid week afternoons every 2-3 weeks 2:00-4:00pm

I usually only kite in the mornings on weekends away where we stay right on the beach and kite all day. That's usually in winter.

I used to wear heaps of sunscreen and sunglasses and all that. Now I wear a peaked cap all the time. A plain nylon one in the warm months and a water/wind proof one in the colder months.

I might wear sunglasses on bright sunny days, but that would be rare.

The peak of the hat is far for more effective at blocking direct sun glare than sunglasses every were. I don't get stinging eyes from sunscreen or poor vision from smeared glasses.

The hat covers the whole top of my head and the brim covers most of my face. I just put sunscreen on the lower part of my face (and wear a wetsuit of course).

Depends on your location...

But here, in wintertime - you can kite half an hour to max three quarters after the sun has set.

And when it is summer - hmmm, you could sometimes kite all night after sunset - but you can definitely kite more than one hour after, without getting too dark :thumb:

That is the good thing about the northern hemisphere - it doesnt get dark all of a sudden - it takes a loooong time, so sunset is never the "end of the session" :naughty:

:D Peter

I'm not talking an hour after sunset. But instead the dead of night. 11pm etc., total darkness
except for city lights...

Yes - I know....

But this is VERY location specific !

11pm is not "dead of night" here - but we can kite in the midsummer period at 11pm.

Here in the summer, the civil twilight ends at 23:30 (civil twilight is quite bright when at the sea), and the nautical twilight never ends - it lasts all night so never totally dark :naughty:

The astronomical twilight is REALLY dark of course - but almost only present in the winther here.
Whereas it starts a good hour after sunset at the equator, all year

So close to the equator it gets dark early and fast, just after 6 PM and the civil twilight only lasts 20minutes :o

Here the civil twilight lasts almost 1½ hour, and it gets around midnight till it ends when summer...

Even in the winthertime - the civil twilight lasts almost an hour - so there are a few good things about the "cold" north compared to closer to the equator 8)

Have rigged after the sun has set, and gone kiting, quite often :thumb:
Not for long, no, but you can get one hour in good light at least.

So as said - very location specific, as we dont even need the moonlight in order to have a reasonable amount of light deep at night (1:30 PM), in the midsummer months

But we have to pay for that in the winther then :(

I remember a bit up in Norway, they kitesurfed at 2:00 at night - as the sun is up 24 hours a day, so you can just pick when the wind and waves are the best - what a luxury :naughty:
But must be hard in the winther with 24 hours of darkness

Are you located in Florida ?
Then I understand you find it strange when some go out after sunset - as it gets dark really fast - somewhere after 8 PM even in the summer, right ?
And only 25 minutes civil twilight.

:D Peter

yep , St. Petersburg FL.

usually it is windiest here during the early morning hours (during winter) or @ sunset or well after sunset (during summer or fall). It definitely will dark by 8:30 fast during peak summer. But that is also
the least windy period so people get desperate till the winds start in earnest in November. I don't find it strange, but I just don't really enjoy not able to see the scenery as I mow the lawn....

8) At 1 o'clock... we do start ripping... every day in the summer until 6.00. When we drink beer.

Today we had to use a wetsuit and work afterwards...had my old Torch 9 who descided to leak in the middle of some serious waves.... 25 knots and heavy shorebreak... 2 scratches and a adrenalinejunkie shivering... dumping it and swimming.

Otherwise plus 50 waterproff and a shirt.
