Hey Guys,

I've been in Gokova for the better part of a week. Never go here. The wind is light, pretty much every day. This is evidenced by the numerous amount of >15 meter kites. I thought 19 meter kites were extinct but they are alive and well here. It's like jurassic park for 17 meter kites here. Saw a guy on a 2012 17 meter vegas with a surfboard and just couldn't believe it. Nothing against surfboards except this is a flat water spot. Really, if you ever show up at a kite spot and see people with 15 meter kites, turn around, get back on a plane and fly somewhere else for christ's sake.

In Gokovo, Turkey there is really just about the lamest, weakest, most consistently weak wind on the planet. If you can go anywhere else on Holiday go there. This place should be dead last on your list. It is a great spot for an absolute beginner but you will outgrow it after day two. Aside from the weak wind there is also absolutely nothing to do here.

So, diatribe over, where else can I go in Turkey? I'm here, I have a rental car with unlimited miles. Where can I drive in Turkey that will allow me to kite without something besides a 14 meter kite and a giant f'en surfboard. Please no more beaches that claim to have consistent wind that windguru just won't see because of "local thermal effects" as I just do not believe you anymore. Many thanks!

great... i have a week booked there on the 24th june, I am staying in marmaris with a hire car so perhaps I will have a week of getting pissed instead. i spoke with sarah @ always windy and there stats said that you should be spending 50% of time on a 9m kite and the other 50% on a 12m.
I hate being under powered really frustrates me, esp as im not the lightest rider....

If its that bad I wont return... when did you arrive and how windy has it been... to be out on 19m etc the wind must of been rubbish...

hope you get lucky towards the end of you hol....

I've been here almost a week and never had more than a few hours of kiteable wind. During those few hours I have been on a 14 meter vegas (which i had to rent) and a 12 meter. Yesterday we were skunked pretty much the entire day. I haven't seen anything approaching 9 meter weather for anyone other than a 45 kilogram teenager.

The website says that if its sunny it is windy here. Well, its been sunny everyday and never all that windy.

Never been in Gokova, my two cents about the lack of wind: also in my home spot, Como lake, Italy, sometimes for a week or two the wind is very light, but it's not the rule. The "normal" condition is a 12 meter steady wind you can really enjoy. It also happens it's blowing 40 (3 weeks ago), but, again, it's not the rule.
I think you can't judge a spot from the kites you can see if you're staying one week only. If you're coming in a very light wind day in my home spot, you will for sure see a lot of big sails in the air but this does not mean it's a super light wind spot. Simply, almost everybody here owns a big (and a small) sail to cover the whole wind range.

youre right, but this place advertises itself as always windy. its not. The wind is very gusty and generally pretty weak. Today was another day with around 2 hours of kiteable on a 12 meter kite followed by zip.

You have been there ONE week and there is no wind.

WOW!

You are at the beginning of the season, you have been skunked for one weeks wind.

IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE!

I went to Egypt for a month and had 2 weeks of light wind followed by 2 weeks of 10m weather.

Before you go and try and ruin someones livelihood, think.

17m Vegas? they don't make that size.

useless troll.

to be honest, the wind is not likely to be expected that light, the reason for that, IMO, is the heavy rain a couple of weeks ago...if you are still in gokova, just check out the sand in front of the schools, it's still wet..i've just started to ride without a shorty a few days ago, i used to leave it off on the beginning of may..normally you wouldn't be stepping on the sand with naked food because of the temp...if i were you, i would praise that you could kite a few hours everyday here in gokova inspite of your unluckiness. Better than nothing...For the guys riding with surfboards with 17 DYNO and 18 m RRD and Cab. Crossbow kites, they are training, and testing their brand new 2012 equipments, for the upcoming Turkish National Course Racing and PKRA Course Racing event in Istanbul by 24th of this month...

Today was marginally better. I was on my 12 meter most of the day.

Interesting the bit about the sand. Yes, it's still walkable although sometimes can be a bit hot.

Would I be better off in a place like Alacati?
