Me & wife are planning a short trip to Miami. I see Key Biscayne as one of the best places to kite. Is this correct? I am trying to find a hotel near the launch site. Any input on this appreciated.

Key Biscayne is great!
But they do have some rules on the spot!
Helmet, vest, IKO license is needed...and a daily fee.
Contact miami kiteboarding before.

Find more info on locations here: www.splocs.com

Have a great trip!

leave your kites @ home

Key Biscayne is a great place to kite but it is closed all summer long to kiting.
Crandon park will not allow it during summer and Bill Baggs park to the south
will not allow it at any time. Conceivably you might find a tiny spot to launch in the
wind shadow and crowds between the two parks where all the hotels are, but I doubt it.

Biscayne Bay is another great place to kite, if you have a boat, since kiting is not
allowed off the Rickenbacker causeway anywhere.

There's only one location in Miami to kite besides MB and that is @ Matheson Hammocks
in South Miami.

Anyways there is max 12-15kts during summer if you're lucky, unless a tropical storm comes by

Have Fun! :bye:

This is all good info. I too would just leave the kites at home and find some fun things to do, unless you want to be like locals watching the wind meters every day hoping it picks up to 12 knots

One can actually kite crandon during the week in the summer and I am quite certain there is no rules regarding helmet and life vest. however they do have a rather unfortunate rule of no weekend kiteboarding and you have to pay some sort of fee and prove to be a competent rider , southbeach 22nd st and north is an option as is matheson hammock. If the wind is from the west different local kiteboarding outfits offer sandbar services.

Recently there have been a a number of rideable thermal days before or after storms. Summer is iffy so I would not pick miami as a kite destination but if you are coming anyways and are bringing kites bring some big ones and you might get lucky!

Also no wind and you really want to ride? I would highly suggest heading to the keys to go to the keyscable park or a bit north there is also ski rixen cable park.

there is wind, it is usually only for 1-2 hours in the late afternoon though if it comes. if there is a mild S or SE sea breeze, it can pick up to 12-15 knots around 4:30 or 5:00 pm until 6 or 7. Two weeks ago I was able to ride about 4 days a week, but there hasn't really been anything since. It just depends on how consistent the weather can be, if the temperatures are just right it can pick up, or a thunderstorm can roll through and kill it.

Thanks all for the info. Really helpful. I will contact MKB and see the current conditions and try to make the best of it.

Matheson Hammock is a great spot (Contact Adventure Sports Miami for more info), friendly crowd, but FL wind WX sucks in the summer.
