How were the waves at the reef(s)?

Reef was about 2km out at Paje and waves were ok, not great. They would form nicely and then peter out rather soon leaving you with very short rides. It took about 5-10min to get to them and your back leg gets pretty tired going on the same tack for such a distance. Also a long swim back if something goes wrong. Didn't see any rescue boats I could call out to if I needed help.

Waves at Nungwi were much better and only about 1km out, wind also cross offshore so made them form a lot better. The best waves I found were at Matemwe, <1km out, when I was doing my long downwinder. You have to take a surfboard with, I could not find a place that rents surfboards. I only had a twintip and snapped it on day 8 but managed to rent a twin tip for the last few days.

fully agree with Lanc. Reef is 1.8 km at paje. if something goes wrong..... good luck and enjoy the swim :jump: So for me too far, if you go, go with others... Matemwe is much better as far as waves concerns (more sticks in matemwe), the reef is 600 meter away (google earth can be helpful)

As for wind direction, in june/july in the morning it is SW (side offshore) in the morning and later in the afternoon it turns S to SE. In august/sept and oct it is more SE to E during the whole day.
From half dec to half march, is NE

About the force, it is a typical tradewind, meaning it comes and stay for a few days, then it disappears for 2 to 3 days and comes back. So if you come from far away, and you go one week, you could be lucky, but also less and kite only 50%. In SE season, 12 and 9 meter are ideal (75-80 kg twintip or surf), meaning we look at 14-24 knots, of course with exceptions. In NE season I would say 12 (14) meter weather, count on 12-18 knots I would say. Keep in mind that this is hot wind, so less powerfull then cold one.

As for tides: in paje you can always kite (except maybe with neap tide), there is a lagoon 500 meters away, not ideal but something. If you plan your holiday, one recommendation:, go with high tide in the afternoon (that is when the wind is strongest and you have water)

good luck
