Yesterday I decided to give it a go with hooked-in kiteloops. It was about 16-18kts and I was using my 11m fuel. I was waiting to reach the top of the jump and then I would loop the kite but the problem was that I was falling way too hard to a point that I almost broke the board, knees and lost my seaspecs.I am using the stock lines and I am looping the kite all the way through. Got two good landing out of 10 but I can't go on this way otherwise I will need soon a hip replacement.

Here are my questions:

- Is the free fall a result of a bad take-off? Started the kiteloop with the kite already past noon.
- Not a good idea to start a kiteloop late?
- A combination of the two above?

First of all set your Fuel to a freestyle setting, if you didn't. Kiteloops on wakestyle setting are killers. Secondly it would be easier to start learning a bit underpowered on a 7 or a 9.

Jump normally, when you reach the apex of your jump and start falling grab the end of the bar hard and loop it (kite won't pull as much if you do this late, the better you get at it, the earlier you loop it).

Free falling is normal, you will be falling until the kite goes back to zenith and catches you.

I do a lot of them on strap directional surfboards
Yeah some will say that move belongs to TT but i live real close to surf so that is what i use

So you are talking about straight jump kiteloop without backroll.....

First :make sure you are on the correct tack because you should use your dominant hand to pull in

Your dominant hand is also your stronger most natural hand to pull bar in for "any kind of loops"

Myself it is my left hand because i ride toeside right foot back and it "became" stronger over time

Are you comfortable at aerial downloop transitions?
Forward 540 downloop to toeside and back 180 downloop to toeside

Those 2 moves train your brain / hand to pull the bar in for kiteloops

When you do those downloops as practice you will also use same hand for regular high kiteloops

An other way to find out your natural hand is:
Carve turn with downloop & see with which hand it is easier to go heelside to toeside for you

When you jump make sure you go high and are travelling "off the wind" a bit in mid-air
A bad take off would send you more into the wind and create a "stalled" loop and hard drop landing

As everyone will say send the kite "backward" after reaching apex and just on the way down
Spin the kite quick until it returns in front in front of you and spot landing for floaty "back foot" landing

Work on your timing and when in doubt in case of a bad take off jump "abort"...."abort"
It is a flowing smooth move and really fun to do over and over...and you should always be in control

Steady winds with correct size kite for conditions is strongly recommended

Have fun.....be safe

- Is the free fall a result of a bad take-off? Started the kiteloop with the kite already past noon.
The reason for the free fall is a late loop, the you are pulling the kite down rather than the kite pulling you up - after apex. The kite will have less power in a late loop after apex, but you will land hard sometimes (the kite will not pick you up before you land).
- Not a good idea to start a kiteloop late?
It´s less scary since it´s less powerful but you often land harder, if you loop before you have reached apex of the jump, the kite will catch you nicer and you will have a softer landing. It´s easier to do this in a lot of wind with a really small and fast kite ;)

So try looping earlier and with a smaller and faster kite ;)

It´s a kiteloop backroll, but the same principal applies:

@SupaEZ,

I am sure I have the strong hand dialed in since it is the same hand I use for looking the kite during a F-16 and hooked-in backroll kiteloop. These two are second nature. But straight kite loop is another ballgame.

@John a,

Next time I will use a kite one size smaller with a bigger board and loop it a bit earlier. I will post a video as soon as I can.

fuel is a tough kite to learn this on - it downloops more powerful than a lot of other kites backloop. it is like ducati vs. scooter. so the challenge learning on a fuel is the gap between p*ssy loop and big air loop. you are in the gap now and that is painful. p*ssy loop is low power to train and feel the kite looping. big air loops catch to float you for a soft landing, but you cannot screw up that high in the air. in the middle is where the pain is if you are on a powerful kite. but if you can't use another kite, i would just work on nailing big air down loops to get used to the power and timing and landings and then many many p*ssy backloops and then put it all together, maybe with an impact vest because you have to pay the price to learn this.

your timing sounds right (way down) and you obviously know how to crank the bar. so you may not be high enough for it to come around and catch

I have another question: Can you make this kind of loop with a big kite let's say a 13m North Evo?

I have learned to do Handplantkiteoops and Backrotationkiteoops but when doing this it's more like I glide 1-2m above the water while looping the kite and I land without the kite catching me, I can do this with both my 13m and 9m Evo.
But my question is if my 13m will be fast enough for me to make a jump + kiteloop and then the kite to catch me?

/Patrik

Large kite is no problem and lots of fun...in 11++ knots i do real nice kiteloops on Riot XR2 19M
Look also at Toby...he trows kiteloops on a large Dyno18 in pretty strong wind
Large kites by nature are slower spinning and gives soft lofty landings
Great idea to practice with larger kites in conditions you and kite can handle

The best advice i can give you is to unhook.
It's a lot easier and safer to kiteloop while unhooked.
