Forgive me if this topic has been covered recently, but I was wondering if anyone has advice to give young kiters who are trying to pick a career in bad economic times where they can still kitesurf plenty (at least 5 days/week) but not starve...

I am an RN. Some of my job choices and long shifts have prevented me from getting water time. Only recently since going part-time am I able to be out in the waves more. Yoo-hoo! Sometimes younger kiters talk to me about what they should choose for a career so they can kite a lot but still make decent money.

Does anyone have any suggestions for younger kiters on the forum?

Limo driver, male stripper, bartender(bar back), waiter are few jobs my friends and I did when we were going to college and gave us plenty of time to study. Mainly because these jobs have flexible hours(night) and you always have cash in your pocket from the tips.

If you are looking for careers, I can suggest teaching. You will have almost 4 months of vacation a year. Hence, the reason I'm able to browse this forum on a Tuesday morning with a warm cup of java, thinking about where I should kite today

I'm an officer in the Merchant Marine. I work four weeks on, four weeks off, and before I started dating my fiancee, I pretty much just traveled to whatever place had good wind in my off-time. Spent months in The Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Texas, South Carolina. The money's more than enough to allow someone to enjoy a sport as potentially costly as kiting.

Have you considered working the night shift with your current career?

Few kiters are DJs...work at night, kite at day !!!

But working at a bar/nightclub is always good as well.

Other than that..anything related to work from the computer!

A couple of useful careers where you can make decent money and can also bunk off when the wind is up (particularly if you're self employed) are:

- electrician
- plumber
- gardener / tree surgeon
- builder / handyman

I know a few good IT contractors that never work more than 8 months a year...always paying the bills and giving them 4 months to do what they want.

I also have a mate who erects cranes...where they don't work when it is windy. That seems to work well with kite surfing...though I think you have to be wired a particular way to do high work like that.

We've also got postal worker (kick off early), police / fire / ambulance service (shift patterns that work well with kiting).

There's also more artistic careers like photography, film making, or journalism / media that could work.

And...there are kite designers, board shapers, and other product designers working directly in the industry.... Where you'd hope they actually use the stuff they make.

And...there's the independently wealthy who have too much time and money anyway...

Not sure what an RN is, but I recommend not choosing the type of job based on kiting. If you like what you do and you're good at it, chances are that you will be able to massage your job into opening up time for kiting.

I am a high school math teacher. I get summers off and get out of work by 330 everyday.

Find a nice school close to the water and you are set!

Two choices. A job that has MTO (maximum time off) during day or a job that is cancelled on windy days. e.g. crane driver, skydive instructor etc

Yes, I would think that a computer-related career would give someone great flexibility so they could kite almost every day! I was asking the question on the forum for a few "younger" kiters that I know. All the posts are great ideas!!
