Hello,

I will go near Altura in Algarve in Portugal during August. I have read it is mainly thermal wind during that time of the year. However, I want to be sure about the sizes of kite I have to take with me. Does someone know strengh of this thermal wind ? Does it blow often over 20 k, or is it mainly 12-18K?

Thank in advance for your help.

take your biggest kite and board. with some luck you will be able to ride with ~12/13 kts

if nothing blows head to Alvor, a couple of km west, with a 7 or a 9m from what i heard from locals

No more than 12-13kts ..... it sucks, I though it wa stronger than that ..... I will try to move to Alvor but with 2 youg children it is not so easy.

Anyway my friend will bring a Speed 3 21, with my 68 kg I will be able to kite with a small breeze.

Thanks for your feedback Tiago

actually it's not that bad. In July and August you have many days over 15 knots. The typical thermals come from WSW and they increase towards the evening. In that sense it's an ideal place to take the family, where you can spend a nice day at the beach with the kids and then have a late afternoon session.

Every summer there are also a few days of levante which is the wind coming from the East. The levante is the full opposite of the SW in that it blows harder in the morning (right after the sun comes up) and then practically dies down by noon.

Bring big kites for sure, but if you can, bring also a smaller one, so you don't miss the occasional fun 20knot day.

Great, thanks a lot for these details, wind should fit perfectly with my Flysurfer S3 12. I will try to find space in my luggage for my 9m, small kite is always better.
