I am looking all over but can not find something better than what is currently available. All the tapes I tried are garbage the glue is getting gooey especially when warm. Dacron tapes are no problem.

this is the best tape I've found for repairing kites and bladders. This stuff is serious tape. pretty much permanent

The awning repair stuff at walmart is not as good.

I would still prefer ripstop but with the good glue. The problem is they sell it without mention of who is manufacturing it. I tried kiteboarding shops sail shops and even parachute shops. Like I said all garbage with gooey adhesive that doesn't hold. There is even growing evidence from parachute industry that those tapes actually cause canopy to deteriorate and they are not recommending any repairs with ripstop tape to parachutes. That's no good. Maybe it is time for a reputable manufacturer to come up with quality stuff.

When you say that the glue "doesn't hold", do you mean that you are not stitching the ripstop nylon tape after gluing it on? For me, the glue is just there to keep the new riptop repair tape in place until I've had a chance to zig-zag stitch it on both sides of the rip with good nylon or polyester thread. I only skip the stiching if I'm repairing a really tiny rip in the canopy.

If you're saying that the "bad" glue itself is actually damaging the existing ripstop nylon on the kite, then I agree, that wouldn't be good...

The glue is very poor you can peel it easily and it leaves gooey mess. When you sew flat seams without folding and topstitching the glue better be good and not have tendency to slide. There seams to be consensus in parachute industry that the ripstop tape should not be used because it's crap.

This is what I did on a flogged trailing edge - some ideas.

The weight of the dacron is 136gsm which does not add that much weight to the kite - considering I added about a square meter to the TE it maybe 150grams heavier.

The problem is not with the tape you use actually..Most probably it's the humidity case...try your tapes with a fully air conditioned environment..

I think I found a solution until they come up with a good stuff. There is a 1" 3M double side tape strong as hell. I will just have to cut 1" strips of Ripstop and stick it after, more work but better result.

OR
place the 1" wide 3M tape strips next to each other to make a 6 inch wide repair patch.

I've done this, then broke out the sewing machine a month later, & it was still good !

It's Lighter if Ya only use the 1/4" wide 3M stuff, and only place it where it needs sewing.
A "Lot" lighter !!!

Also -- always try to wipe the repair aria with denatured or 91% rubbing alcohol , prior
to placing a patch.

Bille
