Not mine - the board's!

I went ahead and got myself a directional in the US... packed it carefully, with extra padding on the nose and tail. No problem getting it checked for my flight home. However, when I opened the bag when I got back to the sandpit, out fell a note from TSA saying that the bag had been searched, and out fell the packing which I had so carefully attached to the nose.

Needless to say, the nose of my as-yet-unused board looks like this: Image

Is there an effective way of repairing this myself?

I don't thing you could do it - at least without effecting the overall looks of the board. It looks like carbon rails on bamboo deck so i suggest you take it to a proffesional repair guy and let him do it looking new again or if there is no one close to you get some epoxy resin repair kit to fix it as best as you can and stick a black nose guard for a surfboard that you can get in any surf shop.
Sorry for your board man, it's not that big of a deal but still it 's a new board.

hope your claiming a new board from the carrier?

It doesn't look structural by that photo. If is an glass epoxy rail this is what i would do.

Sand the damaged part untill its smooth and rounded again.
From the look of it i don't think theres much point building it back. building it back will require you bare back more board to allow a new structure to adhere to.

So. .... sand it smooth as stated.
hand paint any black rail thats lost its colour.
Lay down some localised epoxy resin.
To get a slooth finish on the flats get some thick plastic and clamp it on top of teh repair.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll follow Chris1973's advice - gob it up with epoxy and then cover the repair with a nose guard (which, in hindsight, I should have got before I travelled with the board).

I'm trying to get some compensation from the airline, who are being about as helpful as most airlines are in this kind of situation.
