backroll trouble

Postby andrewkiter » Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:22 pm

Hi i had some trouble doing my backroll i have been kiting 2 seasons now and i wanna get the backroll i starded the seame time than a friend but he than went over me getting it right in 3 days he told me he was full focazed on it. but im not really progresing he told me look over your front shoulder i try and i fail so i bare off witha wave and look over but sometimes im like 200 degrees but i go back without doing the ful rotation maybe i have to be more agressive because i fear litlle any tips for that and too sometimes i do the ful rotation but i dont land with the board on, is it because its way to heavy its really heavy board a LF 120 cm and i weight like 115 pounds because even when i jump they told me to bend the legs back but i cant with that board cause its really heavy.
so any tips and my friernd who got it had a wayyyyyyy lighter board and its a 130cm

Sorry I don't get a lot of what your saying... What helps me is to pull the bar down during the bankroll and more with the front hand. That way the kite pulls you into the rotation and you land with speed.

I also keep my eyes looking forward (not over my shoulder) to slow the rotation. That depends on if your over rotating or under rotating.

Good luck

Try to pop, it makes it way easier. If you don't know how to pop read about it, learn it and then try again to backroll using a pop to get you airborne.

Turning your head helps, but I think for me most of the rotation comes from carving upwind with the board. Turning up into a small wave helps too. Have the kite high, and yes, pull the bar in a little, and once in the air, pull the front hand gently. You don't really have to pull the back hand to send the kite.

Board weight and how well you can edge it could both be factors. Can you try out your friend's board?

Pick out a small ramp or piece of chop 30 feet ahead of you

Time yourself just perfectly with it

At you hit it make sure the kite is at noon

Send the nose of the board upward with front foot as you pull bar in to lift off at the same time

Rotate by directing head and eyes over shoulder....and just float around in mid air...enjoy

Pull on the front hand more as you spot landing to send kite forward and plane out tail first

I personally ride strapped surfboards

As you get better send the move harder higher and faster and surprise your friend with a double

And after that work on your toeside backrolls....they are crazy fun and a sure crowd pleaser

Just go fast and try to keep your kite at 45°. Pop hard and as you're popping throw your body around. It's really not hard you just have to do it a bunch of times to get used to the motion.

I don't recommend sending your kite, I think it slows down your rotation and it looks dumb. If you're not getting all the way around just ride a lot faster so you can get more pop.

supa and dyylan are describing 2 different methods...

First, try what dyylan said - using your load'n'pop to just spin around under the kite. You'll complete a single revolution easily but you won't get a lot of air.

HA !
I hit so hard learning to do a back-roll, that i lost my Right Leg !!
Here is the Diver who found it in 40ft of water the next day :

After i learned to do them, i found it was easier to do it with a bit
of power. My Ozone Edge 13M pulls my 212Lb from 13 to 30mph ;
at 18 to 20mph wind, i can place the kite at 12: with a just bit of forward board-speed,
then just carve upwind (((Real Hard))) and sheet in with Both hands on the center
of the bar and make one back-roll. Simply sheet Out when ya wanna Land.

You can get around with only a foot or two of altitude ; and that's about the same
energy a just -Ok- Board-Pop will give ya, so Ya see there's a Bunch of ways
to do a back-roll.

Andrew,
At first, you dont need to worry about the kite too much.
Do as follows:
1 On the bar: put ur front hand towards the end of the bar and keep yoyur back hand close to the middle
2 Pull your kite towards 12 (don't pull it towardsthe other side of the window) release your edge,
3 As u release your edge, look backwards, your legs and body will follow,
4 When u start your rotation, pull sligthly on your front hand (which is positioned towards the end of the bar),
5 Your kite will move downwards and help you rotating,
6 once you have fully rotated, spot your landing and sligthly angle ur board downwind.

Do it slowly first, as u gain confidence, use ur kite to gain more height, you will pull a double back be4 u know it.

Good tip is also to do the rotation with one hand (i.e. you could let your back hand of the bar as you enter the rotation), this way you are 100% sure that ur kite will not drift towards the wrong side of the wind window.

Commin mistakes are the under-rottaing (in which case your not throwing your neck / legs backwards sufficiently)
