Definitely. Makes one realize we don't know half of the story, doesn't it?

I've read somewhere that the windsurfing lobby was bankrolled by Neil Pryde because he wants to continue to make money as the exclusive Olympic gear supplier. Well, if he's not taking us for a ride in this interview, he pretty much puts that rumor to rest.

Isn't Neil Pryde the owner of Cabrinha?

FYI:

The RSX class association is independent from Neilpryde, who is the equipment supplier. Most classes have associations that represent them. It's really similar to US Sailing for example with respect to the different US Olympic classes. The association takes action on behalf of the membership. This is exactly what is happing with the RSX suit against ISAF.

Neil Pryde and Neilpryde have a very good relationship with ISAF despite what is happening with the RSX class association. From Neil's perspective, having both windsurfing and kitesurfing in the Olympics would surely be in his best interests given his relationship with not only Cabrinha and Neilpryde, but also due to the fact that Pryde Performance Manufacturing produces several competitive brands as well as their own.

I will say that after watching a bit of the Olympic Sailing, RSX was by far the most exciting to watch. It's a disappointment that another class couldn't have fallen on the sword.

In the end, I don't know if one, both, or neither will be on the water in Rio, but I guess that the class association for RSX didn't have many viable options left to live.

The fact remains that if any of the upper RSX competitors get into kite racing, they will all be at the top within the year. The level of training and experience that they have will likely change the landscape a bit. Interesting stuff for sure. Best of luck to both classes.

Nice, balanced perspective, Kent.

I seem to recall that early on, Neil Pryde was in favor of the kiters' bid, but towards the end switched to support the RS:X instead. Do you have some background on this? Was it when he realized that their destinies were tied and that adding kites meant kicking out windsurfing, or was there something else?

Men's keel boat class the star is out as is the new womans match racing in the elliot 6 along with the RS:X sailboard. The multihull is back in but not the Tornado. It's a mixed male female crew on a Narca 17 cat. I figure the sailboard will be back in 2020 and they will ax the fin class.

They will have to axe two classes if they want both men and women windsurfing back in... Or add more medals!

Axing the cats from the 2012 Games was total rubbish...

Yes it would appear that all the people who compete at the Olympics are full time and get money from somewhere to support this.

So for us normal people with a normal job and family etc racing at this level and staying in touch with the top competitors who get to train every day and have coaches etc behind them is really out of reach unless you are extremely talented.

So if your a weekend worrior and the Olympics has lite a flame within then think again, there will only be about 40 or 50 competitors at the 2016 games with only one from each country and they most likely wont have worked for a couple of years leading into the games :o

This is a one-sided look at Rio from the campaign to get windsurfing reinstated.

http://saveolympicwindsurfing.wordpress ... al-in-rio/

It focuses on the expected conditions at Rio.

It does show how different the Olympic competition will be. There is a history of very light winds at the Olympics - Beijing was an example. Rio is likely to be the same. They could be very unlucky and get very light winds.
I read a report of a recent top level kite course race in The Netherlands being called off because the wind dropped below 7 knots.

They may have to develop different race formats for different wind strengths.

Having to work kites to keep them in the air at a crowded start line would be a problem. They may have to have a reaching start and limit the numbers as they would for a slalom race. They may even have to run a downwind slalom racing format if its really light - but could have difficulty getting upwind to the start without the help of boats.

It also shows that the Olympians dont need to do anything but be bought the very best lightwind equipment and learn to be the best on it in less than 15 knots by 2016.
