G'day all,

has anyone tried the Airush Cypher 5'10" surfboard? Also, do you know the width of the 5'10" as the website doesn't seem to show it?

Any info would be great!

erf, I am following up with the glitches on the site.

The Cypher sizes are:
Cypher 5’4” 163cm (5.4”) 48.5cm (19”)
Cypher 5’6” 167.5cm(5’6”) 49.5cm (19 1/2”)
Cypher 5’8” 172cm (5’8”) 50.5cm (20”)
Cypher 5’10” 177cm (5’10”) 58cm (22 3/4”)

I am 75 kgs and use the 5'10 as my standard surf board but haven't had many sessions behind a kite living in Cape Town. I can only comment a lot on the 5'8 as this is my go to board for cross-on/on shore riding. The 5'10 is perfect for bigger riders (85kg +) looking for a lightwind kitesurf board. It has the flattest rocker in the Airush surf series range so it makes it a breeze to maintain speed. Upwind riding is pretty easy (no Sector of course) but tweaking your stance a bit forward and playing a bit more on the rail drives it upwind. The size might seem big but with the flying V bottom shape - rail to rail for a bigger rider is easyy.

I always hear Darwin is a bit light until the cyclones come to town.

I tried the 5'6
it was very impressive - a lot of bite and yet feels very small and efficient. A definite step forward from the choppie... It'd guess using the same tech the large ones would be very interesting in that, if like the 5'6, they feel small and have so much efficiency and bite, it would be impressive with the larger, lighter wind planing area...

thanks for info, nice one. I'd love to try one but not possible, it'll have to be a leap of faith if I wanna go for it!.

Do they have a good top end? My concern is that the 5'10' won't be good when the wind does come up (or waves too), I know it a tough call to make a board that will 'do it all' but I don't want it to be similar to my Sector and me looking into a smaller one as it picks up.

At the moment I can use my Sector in small waves but I'm looking into the next level and like everyone I want to get the right one!

How much do you weight?
Which version and size Sector do you have?
I feel no matter what the Sector will always be the lightwind machine and perhaps you need something like the Cypher 5'8 to bridge the gap from your lightwind board down to moderate wind conditions. I'll be vague until I know your weight and sector board you ride.

thanks for taking an interest. I'm 125 kg and 6'4" and I have a Sector 60V2 (or more accurately the One Design) with usually light winds in our neck of the woods but can occasionally get a good 20 knots. My favourite kite is the Dyno 18m, but when wind picks up I go to 14m Rebel, then use a 12m which I've used in up to 35 knots but the kite tends to deform too much. So, generally I can hold down alot of power.

I ride my Sector strapless now and have some experience on a few surfboards now (borrowed from mates). I've used a North WAM 5'10", a Best SB 6.0', and I own a Cyclone 6' SB but its only good for strong winds. Infact all the boards I've tried I've only used in 18 to 23 knots or so, so I don't think that sort of wind is good trial, althoug I have a lot of fun. I did find the Best gybed the easiest and the Cyclone could hold alot of power but the WAM was fairly good at all and it surprised me in how fast I could go with it. As I'm new to strapless I don't know how to 'surf' the boards yet but I can carve fairly fast and drop maybe 1 out of 50 gybes.

Anyway, I hope this can help in your info.

Hi Robbie,

Well I would 100% go for the 5'10 based on your size and wind conditions - no doubt! You have a Sector for your lightest winds and a high rocker 6'0 surfboard for your higher winds. The Cypher 5'10 will nestle right in the middle, it will really compliment your quiver.

Since you are new to strapless, this board will be really stable to practice your footwork as it is 2cm narrower than your Sector.

Can I test your patience a bit more and ask a few more questions please?

So, the 5'10" has a width of 23 3/4" or 58 cm, won't that be a little too close to the Sector 60 and make the board a little bouncy as the wind or chop comes up? My thinking is that I'm not looking for light wind performance as much as I'm more looking at its surfing performance. I do still want to ride it in 20 knots and waves (which is what we get in our Monsoon Season or Wet Season. My worry is that it will not handle the waves as well as say the 5'8" and that 5'10" feels too big?

Mind you, having said all that, I was super surprized at how rough the Sector can handle so I would not be surprized if the same pedigree comes through in the Cypher and feel smaller than what the size looks like. Can I put it another way, what would you thing the top end would be, or what would be the biggest waves the 5'10" would be recommended?

Hey Robbie,

The Cypher 5'10 width is 58cm = 22 3/4" roughly.

It's difficult because you are asking a lot from one board.
It sounds to me that you want to replace your 6'0 Cyclone and want 2 boards a Sector and Cypher Blank If thats the case (20 knots, Wave riding). Get the Cypher 5'8.

The Cyphers can handle medium surf - waist to chest.

If you have a chance to ride the Choptop than you will have a good idea of how the Cypher feels. The Cypher has the stability and ease of the Choptop with the performance of the Quad due to the Flying V bottom shape.
