Whats the strongest wind you have been out?

Postby ErikFromEstonia » Mon Nov 23, 2015 4:47 pm

Its 40knots. A weather station few km away showed gusting into 60. Wasnt kiting, i was out on a two man trapezed skiff sailboat 29er. 2014, i was 14. The waves were about 2/3 of a mast high. Mast is (6.20 m/18ft). Whats the highest you have been out with? Ruben Lenten and Kevin Langree were in UK with 90knots.

not that much...once with a 5.5 sqm kite...maybe it was 40+ knots.
Worst session in my life...had nothing exciting about that.

My session many years ago in up to 40 knots with a 12 was already way more fun...flying...still remember...first session of my holiday...and couldn't do boardoffs for 1 week afterwards...such soar muscles from lifting my legs up and holding during every jump, which was about 6-10 seconds every time...some big air there ;-)
Amazing!

Nowadays having no more desire to go out in 30+ knots. I leave this to others ;-)

What??? 40-60kn on a 29er??? In 5m waves? You are joking, right?

And nobody ever kited in 90kn of wind. No.bo.dy. The wind force pushing on the body alone would be in the range of 800N = 80kg. You are blown over, without a kite.

strongest wind i have experienced was 300 mph (260 knots) when a tornado hit my house as a child. the family was safe but the house was utterly disintegrated. Strongest wind I will voluntarily kite is 45 knots. Above that is no fun.

Havent you seen the video on rubens or kevins facebook where kevin jumped on land and stayed a bit in the air? Without no kite or anything. There is some footage in youtube of them kiting that but it will be included in the chapter one movie.

I have seen the Ruben Kevin vid. If its the one i'm thinking off the wind is around the 50 knot mark.

I have been out in winds gusting past 50 knots. What that actual wind speed was is unknown. But it was bloody stupid.

Unlike Toby I enjoy the hell out of a 40 knot session. The wind is howling the sea is massive. You sure know your alive. But its as dangerous as fuck. Don't even contemplate such winds until you are much older and have very good skills.

I'm kiting Tarifa on a regular basis, so I know what 40, 45kn look like. I used to kite 40kn years ago, but not anymore. Doesn't scare me (Tarifa 40kn is no wave to speak of), but it's just hard work and I don't enjoy it any more. 35kn in gusts is enough wind for me :thumb:

50kn gusts is the maximum I kited in, with a 7m it's more survival than fun. I can handle my 7m well untill about 46kn gusts and still maintain an proper edge to jump, above that it just becomes survival.

I wonder if people just habitually over-estimate the wind strength?

Who would take a 14 year old out on a 29er in 40 - 60 knots?!

Kiting in 90 knot winds? I don't think so. 90 knots is over 166 kph, over 103 mph. A category 2 hurricane.

My own experience is that anything over 35 kts is pretty uncomfortable, even with a 5m kite because the wind at those strengths tends to be very unstable. I guess 40 kts might be OK if it were steady wind. When you're mega powered it's hard to do anything on the water that involves carving - the only thing you can do is jump - I guess that's Ruben's thing.

I agree. 40 knots is my limit. Ive don't it a few times and its always gusty. Think gusting 46 was my highest. It's a rush but I take a pass now when it starts to hit 40.
