Buy a Go Joe. They last a longtime and you can sell it down the road to recoup a big chunk of the cost.
If you have a cheap board than spray paint it fluro-orange so it's easier to spot and forget the leash or Go-Joe.
If you have a bling $800 board buy the Go-Joe.
The problem with leashes is that the kiters that can use one safely don't need them 99.9% of the time and the kiters that need a leash can't use one safely.

I really don't get why anyone would want or need one? I was told to never use one, and how dangerous they can be by my instructor when I took my lessons a few years back. Even when learning I never needed one. Body dragging back to your board is easier than riding upwind! I have never, ever been unable to recover my board, granted, on the odd occasion it can be a bit of a mission, and if I lose my board...oh well, better than being smacked in the face by it!
And those GoJoe things are ridiculous! Again, why the hell would you need one? They serve no purpose at all! If your that crap, give up and choose a hobby more suitable to your skill level

Well said.
If you are going to go out in really have conditions, the only good solution I've found is a bright red board. Go Joes are usually pretty good, but I've had two rip.
If you insist on a leash. I'd say the only leash you should consider is a real-leash. I sometimes use them in light conditions, and without incident so far. Make sure to unhook from the board leash it if the wind picks up to even moderately over-powered.

Hey man.
Stop making fun of board leashes. They are a cool accessory to my harness and make me look more hardcore... Haters will be haters.
