Postby JGTR » Wed Apr 03, 2013 8:26 pm

Apart from the obvious (kite, board etc :D ) what equipment do you instructors take out on the water with you???

Any useful bits and pieces, tricks of the trade :?:

Thanks

I highly recommend a good emergency whistle that works when wet (I can't do the 2 finger method), good to have floating tether for students glasses. Something like Seaspecs if they don't have sunglasses, I lend an old pair of mine. Some locations water shoes or booties are a must to protect from cuts and punctures.
Don't forget a smile and a good sense of humor!

Now that's more like it!!

Whistle, knife, phone, tool kit, pump, spares (screws etc) - radio?????

I'll be a long way from the shore, tidal estuary with a long walk to the water so need to have everything I need with me.

You said "...on the water..". If you're including land, I would add a windmeter and you should ALWAYS have at least 1 knife. I also personally always keep my car keys with me. Unless you're blessed with very predictable winds, 2 kites - in order to cover a much bigger wind range. There's a lot of other stuff which could be added depending upon:

1. Conditions.
2. Type of lesson.
3. Student's ability/comfort level.
4. Distance from emergency services and/or medical attention.

I don't know what you mean by "tidal estuary" but I wouldn't be surprised if you'd need foot protection, sun block and a small inflatable raft/boat to shlep the stuff if the "tidal estuary" means shallow water. If it means mud or sand, a wide-tired cart (or a couple of slaves).

Fully insured thanks, will be working for an established school. Wetsuits/foot protection supplied, was thinking more along the lines of small equipment that could be easily carried in a rucksack, can't use a cart as the tide will come in and cover the sand.

Anyone use a VHF handheld radio???
