San Juan, Puerto Rico - Escambron?

Staying in Old San Juan and will be kiting at the usual spots. But if I just want to go to the closest spot, is Escambron an option? Not the swimming zone itself, but everywhere outside of that. I've already walked the whole coast from Old San Juan to Eacambron, so I'm aware of the submerged rocks and lack of exit points for drifting in with a downed kite. But beyond taking my own risks, would the authorities or the local surfers have a problem with me kiting there? Other issues to consider? Any previous experiences there to share?

Thanks.

I used to surf there a long time ago,

you will prolly get all your stuff stolen from you there.

I wouldn't go there (Notice proximity to "La Perla")

You sure you're not thinking of the surf spot right in front of La Perla? Escambron seems pretty safe and has lots of families, etc. Or maybe things have changed since you were there? Anyway, thanks for the insight.

Hi, does any one know where to stay in Puerto Rico, we we'll have a car, so we don't need to be on the kite spot, because the prices for a beach apartment a kind of high.

Does anyone know for an apartment from 6.2. - 27.2. for less than 750 usd/week?
We need an apartment for 5 persons (first few days only 3).

Regards,
Urban

Jesus......................... :nono:

There is a big parking in the escambron area that is safe. You would see women jogging
Alone on that area and people on bicycles.............
There is a lot of people and families that goes to the swimming area that is called "escambron"
And a lot of people that goes to the surf spot that is called "La 8". Everyone parks
on the surronding areas without any problem.

I suggest to don't kite "la 8" for the lack of exit points.

There are some spots closer that have practlically all the beach as exit point like "Ocean Park", "punta las Marias" and "Isla Verde Beach". Today the wind is on the 17 to 23 knots on those spots :thumb:

Take a taxi is a short ride.

La Perla is not close to the "La 8" spot, there is a long walk from La 8 to La Perla.

Check www.homeaway.com select the town you want to stay and look for properties that are a short drive to the beach. If you want to kite and surf I recommend to look for the towns of Isabela,
and Aguadilla they're on the Northwest area of the island. If you want to visit the NW area try to find flights to BQN airport that airportis in Aguadilla Town. From SJU airport is like a 2 hour drive to the NW Area.
If you speak Spanish you can also check for properties at www.clasificadosonline.com

Thanks, Manuel. I have been kiting Ocean Park, which is of course lots of fun. But it is a $17 taxi ride each way or a long-ass wait for a bus each way. The outside reef is sweet when it's breaking, but everything else is just chop. I was thinking that Escambron would offer nicer, slicker water as well as some surf on the outside. And of course some rocks to kill your kite and grind your flesh. What could be better?

What about the area near Boca de Cangrejos? Looks like it might have some slick water before the surf too. Between Ocean Park, Punta Las Marias, and Isla Verde, what are the primary differences? Are they all about the same? Or does one have better surf, better beach, etc?

The beach in front of the Marriott Court yard (near Boca Cangrejos) is a nice beach to kite.
That beach is next to the Carolina Public Beach.

On the beaches you mention, the Punta las Marias outer reef is the best spot for waves http://vimeo.com/11385226 , for me Isla Verde is less chopy than Ocean Park.

You need a rental car to move around and enjoy the different spots around the Island!
For example at a short drive from Old San Juan to the west you can find "El Unico beach", "Dorado beach" and other nice spots, to the east of old San Juan you can find the beach in front of Rio Mar hotel, the Luquillo Public Beach and others.

Here are some videos of different spots around the island.
