What does this IronHeart3 middle pin do?

I'm trying to modify my North bar to a single front line release and increase the size of the lower portion of the centre hole slightly from 5 to 6mm. The upper portion of the hole is already 6mm.
However as I am trying to run a drill through it is crossing the pathway of the centre pin shown in the photo and to get a clear 6mm hole I am going to have to take a small notch out of the centre pin, which I don't really want to do in cast it is anything important.
The thing is, I can't see what the heck that centre pin does!!! The two outer pins secure the latch for, and the end of the chicken loop, but I can't see what is the purpose of the middle pin.
Some advice is required here before I do something drastic I might regret.
