I'm sad this happened to you Marty. And you were having such a great time at the top of your game traveling, kiteboarding, teaching and inspiring others including myself. Your a great rider for sure!

Riding with you last summer there were times that watching you kite aggressively with big loops on every tack made me nervous (and others). I remember seeing your mother terrified on the beach as you would come in super hot with a huge splash and all the spectators waited to see if you were ok. I'm all in for aggressive riding, don't get me wrong. But I notice for myself when things go wrong that often I have stopped kiting for myself and the zen space we feel but instead I have started to focus on pleasing the spectators.
It's difficult for me to ignore the cameras when they come out and usually Murpheys law sets in at the same moment.
So further expanding on the "how to avoid" topic, I believe our chances of non injury are much much greater when we stay focused on our ride only.
Anyway I'm not saying you're a "Hollywooder" and for sure we all get caught in this from time to time. Just felt it might be a worthy observation from my own experience.
Much respect, fast recovery (6 months? That's fast!) and safe rides.

Quick heelz bro. Hate that happened to you. I always ride my straps a little lose so I can ditch the board easily when I am coming in hot and know I can't nail the landing.

Yeah, the kiteloops. Hearing a lot of accidents because of it.
That's why I did only a low kiteloop section on my Airstyle DVD.
Didn't feel like getting injured in my age. Something to consider. And besides a megaloop, a kiteloop is nothing special. Rather do a high jump with a nice grab instead!

Good luck to everyone!

maybe if someone taught how to do megaloops, like when conditions are right when they are wrong, how to bail, how not to bail, kite size, if that stuff was taught maybe there would be less injuries. people gonna megaloop. Right now everyone is learning on their own what to do what not to do of course there are injuries.

We get hours and hours instruction on landing launching jumping, everything else in kiteboarding, but amount of instruction we have for megaloops is "dude go for it".

ps that french video is ok it's the only instruction on kiteloops I have seen

to marty

ouch!
did the surgeon explain why he put plate and screws rather than a good old nail
with which you'd be walking nearly straight away (I hope you do not walk with this before 2 /3 months after the op)

how to avoid it... toby replied but what's your point of view?

to toby... yeah, kiteloops: the'yre a bit scary so
when you throw a good one, it feels good :thumb:

anyway, recover well, and take care
your story looks like it could happen to all of us :allbegood:

Yeah, Kiteloops...

I just injured my ribs on a kiteloop this past monday. Nothing like Marty though, I should be okay in a couple of weeks more.

I was using a harness that was too big, and it hurt me. I guess gear must be the correct size, otherwise you run the risk of injury.

No way I'm stopping my kitelooping, its the most fun. Just not boosting so hard for'em, you know?

Hope you get well soon!

at 0'27 I advise that the harness should be tight as ass
and that harness should be dripping wet before putting it on
(and have someone to hold your kite whilst you're tightening it if loose during session)

how many sore/broken ribs would that avoid :bye:

one more thing: belts are cool but a seat prevent this perfectly
when I have sore ribs i use an old seat harness and it does the job :D

yeah, the harness inquestion was an XL, which i fit into pretty well last year. Lost some weight and now its too big.

My bad, should've known

The worst thing is that i missed a perfect day of kiting to this oversight. Having the correct gear is so important.
