Underground speed board questions

Postby SalmonSlayer » Sat Mar 02, 2013 5:43 am

Before I cut up a perfectly good 2006 Slingshot Glide into a speed board. I want to make sure I have explored one last option

I have not been able to find production speed boards except from Underground

Does anyone know where they are sold in the USA?

Any opinions on the Underground speed board?

Underground is out of business, so the used market might be the only option, but it will be super hard to find one. I doubt any dealer bought any for stock, but you never know.

If you are interested, I used to be a UG dealer and can make some calls to see if I can find one.

The UG owner has now started Axis kiteboards, but no speed board.

I hope this helps,

Bob

Cape Doctor has made a lot of speed boards. They are within spitting distance of Langebaan, and a stone's throw away from Walvis Bay, so they have good venues to test their products. Why not drop them a mail? They might have a pile of old speed boards collecting dust at the back of the shop.

Here is the link. You can see some of their speed boards half way down the page:

and here is a picture of Sjoukje Bredenkamp riding what appears to be a Cape Dr. speed board:

There's also Xcellerator who I think are in South Africa and the boards are approx equivelent to £500 GBP. Problem is unless you know your local speed spot always gives you runs on one tack you will need to purchase a pair as they are asymetrical. The Underground board on the feet of James Longmuir won the 2011 Weymouth speed week so it does work. It is short for a speed board and I don't know of it being used on a regular basis by any speed competitors. Most of the speed guys build their own boards based roughly on the Xcellerator style and play around with fins and chopping them up. If you look on the speed section of kiteboarder.co.uk you will find a whole section about building and modifying speed boards that was started by a top UK speed board builder called Mike Pacey AKA chipmunk. He has bulilt boards for the 5 times British champ Dave Williams and I have 4 of his speed boards and a prototype light wind speed board. If you could manage the postage he would be sure to build you a board. Nothing wrong with chopping up an old board if you get one not worth a lot.
