Jumping over a whale

Postby Van Hunk » Mon Jul 08, 2013 1:32 pm

In search of singularity (I suppose), I was wondering whether there is anyone in this forum that has jumped over a whale?

Whilst I have no video evidence to prove it, I managed to do it 6 times on Saturday. (A friendly pod of whales just hung out in the bay..)

It was mind blowing and terrifying and absolutely the best kiting experience of my 10 years on the water.

Has this been done by anyone else?

Riding next to a whale with some respectful distance would be awesome to do.

Jumping over it is just bad and shows no respect.

I'm not sure what puzzles me the most

That kitesurfing is such a weird sport that such a question is to be expected.

Or that whales apparently have taken to go to surf spots for weekend entertainment.

(There was this other story about a while diving under surfers and accidentally flipping them in the air by the tail).

I don't think I'd want to jump over one, especially six times.
They are wild animals, totally unpredictable and need a little respect.
Like this poor surfer that got nailed this weekend:

Really?

Just like in the len10 vid you could jump "over" in a manner than going to send you down wind and never put the whale in danger but give you one of the best experiences of a life time.

If given the opportunity and right conditions I would do it for sure.

I agree with both Toby and Plummet. Jumping directly over a whale I disagree with. Jumping off to the side where you carry far enough away and down wind would be ok.

But...whales tend to travel in pods so I would be ultra cautious about other whales where my landing will be. If it looks suspect then I wouldn't do it. I would hate to come down on top of a blow hole of a surfacing whale I didn't see just 4 seconds before I boosted.
