Sri Lanka: While it undoubtedly has great kiting and lots to see, I thought that the kiting was away from the more interesting parts of the country?
Mui Ne: We have been there (not kiting) unfortunately and I dont think I can convince the missus to go back to the same place.
Bahia Salinas: Sounds great for kiting but hard to find any more information about the area itself, is there much appeal there for a non-kiter?
Cabarete sounds ideal but unfortunately I should have added that while the dates are not fully fixed we will be going sometime between and October and January and I take it that there is very little wind in Cabarete then.
Cumbuco (or similar along that coast) sounds pretty good and seems the most likely so far (and would be a definite if it was Spanish speaking).
Any other options in Latin America at this time of the year?

Thanks again.
I copied and pasted something a wrote for another thread. I hope it helps.
If you need more info, don't hesitate to ask..

"... Cartagena, on the Colombian Caribbean coast, is a great kitesurfing destination. The main spot is known as La Boquilla. Good winds, hot water, long stretches of unpopulated beaches. Whist, it never gets too crowded, there are Kitesurfers here from all over the world. Some nut cases hang out right in front of the historic city but, this unlikely spot is not for everyone. It's all about rocks and waves and, impressing the tourists. ;-)

The good season here is from December to March, when the trade winds are blowing. Any other time, as I said, you must travel up north to Cabo de la Vela.

In Cabo de la Vela you'll find a couple of kitesurfing schools. Cabo has no electricity and the facilities are pretty basic. You can rent a hammock and/or small rooms and have succulent fish and lobster meals arranged, with local Wayuu ladies/families. The Wayuus are the indigenous ethno-linguistic group who inhabit the region. ..."

I just want to add my experience from Sri Lanka and Cumbuco to help you decide:

Sri Lanka - as already said there are a lot of historical and natural sights on the island, not too far geographically from Kalpitya - but driving is quite slow in Sri lanka, I think you can estimate you need about 3 hrs to cover 100km and driving after dark is a real hassle , so you will always need to make trips lasting at least a number of days to get somewhere and enjoy it. With the exception of Wilpattu NP, which you can see in one long day.

But in Kalpitia itself there is NOTHING. I dont think a non-kiting person will like it as a base for 2-3 months! You cant sit on a beach and just get a drink, food, massage, nothing! There are also a lot of muslims in the area, so women in bikinis, or perhaps women in general, will get their attention, and they are not that friendly and definitely they dont speak English. There are also no bars & restaurants in the villages around, just a few snack/street food options which did not look too tempting, and a restricted number of licensed shops which sell / serve alcohol but are not really places to socialize, at least from my experience. You will be pretty much dependent on the place where you stay to feed you (most of the places are with full board and they know why) and on the people that come there ..I think for 2-3 months it can be pretty boring, imho if you dont kite.

Cumbuco - the exact opposite . The village itself is lively and with good vibe, with lot of places to get a drink, excellent food, meet people and there are such options directly on the beach also. there is beach volleyball , you can rent a buggy .. at least some things to do on the kiting spot. And I found Brazilians much far more friendly than the ppl around Kalpittya.

But all sights are far away from Cumbuco. We only made a trip to a forrest a few hrs drive away one day, and I think that is one of the only nearby options. But if you perhaps want to spend a week now and there traveling somewhere, you can just fly to other Brazilian places (Salvador, NP lencois maranheses, belem and the amazon river..) and then there is some great stuff to do. The air tickets were quite reasonable from what I remember.

It obviously depends on what you prefer, but from these two I would definitely recommend Cumbuco.

Brazil is not cheap though, but then none of the kiting destinations are in my experience.

Hi,
definitely Sri Lanka! we have fantastic wind 24/7 and Kalpitiya lagoon is the happening place for kiters.
I have been living in this awesome country for 13 years now, i can tell you there's LOADS of things to see and do. Of course in this type of country, which is developing fast, you have pros and cons, but the kiting aspect of things has NO cons my friends. Find a nice place next to the lagoon, (for example my brand new one! www.rascalskiteresort.com or www.kalpitiyakitesurfing.com  ) and have the blast of a lifetime. There are wonderful islands to be visited, breath-taking downwinders which can stretch for miles, passing very interesting reef wave spots, endless flatwater lagoons, sand spits, you name it, it's here! If you want wind, you might even get tired of it, it blows CONSTANTLY day and night, from May to around middle of September. Full moon lagoon sessions are common practice at our lagoon.
There are many comfortable flights nowadays and it's 3 hrs approx from the airport. The people in our village are very friendly and helpful. Anyone who comes has to of course have respect for the local culture and therefore will gain respect, just like anywhere else in the world. It is truly amazing here for kiters!
I hope the info was useful for all, if you have any questions i'll be happy to answer any, even if you are not going to come! we want this place to grow!

If you like crowded beaches including girls in bikinis on the beach, partying in big venues , commercialism everywhere then don't bother with NZ. If you like endless uncrowded beaches available with every form of riding from sick slicks to ridiculous wave spots, a low key friendly vibe with a few beers in the evenings to end your sessions in one of the most beautiful places on earth -, NZ. If you are into the outdoors there is so much to do.

if you do go to Sri Lanka check out the brand new place ( completed in 01.08.2013) right by the lagoon of Klapitiya. Main idea of putting up this place was to accommodate kiters who want to be next to water, hoping to stay longer at an affordable price.

www.tinyurl.com/KiteCamp

- We offer very specious twin cabanas with attached shower
- Village shop where you can buy your basic groceries
- B&B
- We have the best comfort beds to offer ( we have have given extra attention in creating the best sleeping comfort. You would be amazed of the comfort )
Handmade out of Palmayrah tree trunks.
- If your main interest is to use your own equipment and to have the freedom to kite when ever you feel like it, this is one of very few places ( compared to price and service) right by the lagoon.
- At the moment we offer 5 cabanas ( double occupancy) within a coconut plantation.
- This is a specially an option for long stayers as we also offer you the option to prepare your own meals if you wish to or pre-order from our Village cafe.
- If you are not a beginner, then you can launch your kite here and ride upwind to reach the flat water area of the lagoon. Since you are right next to the lagoon, you can do your session before all the kiters flock from all over ( before it gets a bit crowded) you could even ride downwind from here too.

Do check it out

www.kalpitiya.ch

use the reservation foam if you wish to check on availability and price for your stay.

or just drop an email: info@kalpitiya.ch kitecamping@gmail.com
Hope to see some of you soon in kalpitiya.

Hangloose.

I suppose I am late answering this lead.

If you are considering a place to kitesurf for 2-3 months with consistent wind, and not too expansive.

I would recommend you to come to Penghu, Taiwan.

You can stay at Sunrise B&B, the rate is 500 USD per month for a double room.

You can ride flat water and you can try wave riding as well.

Check out the wind statistics.

Image

there are at least 25 kiting days (20 knot) per month from Oct. to Mar.

please bring one small kite (smaller than 7 square meter) with you, wind is over 30 knot sometimes.

check out this flat water spot.
