One question:
What's the max wave size in side to side-off shore winds (18-25Kn) you can take a Vanguard 5'4"?
> 6ft or even 12ft???
cheers!
PS.
Need to get one + planning my next wave riding trip

Here you go

for 1 lenght I could do two vanguard pads
Yeah, Hydroturf is awesome. I've used it on 4 boards now. On my VG I sanded the back down till it was about half thickness to save a little weight. Good padding for chop and jumps, good grip, and cheap.

Hydroturf seems a little expensive here in Oz, 1 sheet delivered is $147AU - will keep looking.

Ok, its official. Vanguard 5'2"is dope. Finally got mine after nearly 6 months waiting and had two epic days. Took a little getting used to for starters but this thing is a wave machine. What Felix says is dead right..... this thing gives you so much more wave to play with. The glide and speed get you past closeouts and it has heaps of drive off the top without stalling out. Its not very often I can get more than one or two hits per wave but this thing lets you ride a wave for turn after turn.
Just as well it goes upwind so well because you gonna end up way downwind once you hook into a nice swell. The speed off a bottom turn is crazy. Don't really know how to handle it all yet.
Oh yeah ... she makes a kinda cool hissing noise once you crank her up in the flats.

I must say I agree with Slyde,
I rided My 5'6" yesterday and Today in small mushy lake waves and I must say I felt the flex of this board so comfortable and the drive and responsiveness of the board is so great.
I have to admit I loved surfboards before but now it went to a whole new level. We need another word for awesomeness++
This monster is the real thing!

Can I ask what is your weight? I'm considering 5'4" or 5'6" for myself but it's difficult to choose without trying them out. I'm around 195lbs (88Kg) 5'9" in height and I'm generally on 6' surfboards, to cover pretty much all wind and wave sizes..

Go with the 5'4". 5'6" is going to be way too much float. I'm 185 and could have gone either 54 or 52 but went 54 because I specifically wanted easy planing for light wind. In general I'd say the 54 planes up about as easy as a 6'4" regular surf board.

Wow! The equivalent of 10" more in reg surfboards??? That's insane!

MPU- Mordern planning hull.
The VG planning is just like a hydro foil. Once it up and going and the resistance has been broken you are up and running. The board just keep gaining momentum.
One of the coolest things to watch is people pushing water and you are up and going on probably the smallest craft on the water .

I'm 85kg but I have 5'2" and 5'6" because I want to be able to paddle the 5'6" for surfing
