I almost exactly the same as the OP
But I do not brush the melted candle wax in. Bllx to that. I just drop the line into the melted wax and pull the line out between tight finger and thumb wearing my motorcycle gloves.
I then let it cool, and run the line back through my finger & thumb getting rid of the excess.
The line will be more flat than round, do not worry about this, it will sort itself out over a short time
the line is stiffer, so I normally leave the ends wax less to make the process of attaching back to the bar and associated hardware easier. I never get the wax in the part of the line where it goes through a cleat. You do not want it smooth in that area, you need to to rough up enabling the cleat to bite into the rope
After a couple of sessions the line will become a little more flexible
The line will last a damn sight longer than unwaxed
I use tea light candles as they are silly cheap and I had loads sitting around
