Board Bag Zipper

Postby TurcoLoco » Tue May 14, 2013 10:17 pm

OK, everybody knows it is best to wash and dry your board before putting it in a bag.
Sometimes though it is late sunday, you are tiered, and have to chose between the bag and your expensive leather seats on your Porsche or Ferrari :) .
After your long drive sunday night, even more tiered, you forget to wash...
Do you always have to lose the damn zipper to salt or rust even if it is a new boardbag?
I just lost a MANERA brand new board bag after forgetting once...
The Zipper just rusted away...
I am considering Velcro or any other falsafe system for the lazy...
Any experiences to share?

I don't seem to have that problem in my 1994 Toyota Previa.

Come on guys...
Seriously speaking, who hasent lost a perfectly nice boardbag because of a salt stuck or corroded zipper?
Why are most made of metal anyways, there must be alternatives...

Buyer beware - avoid the problem by not buying board-bags with metal zipper sliders or teeth.

Ripped a zip trying to get my board out on the beach last week. Here's some tips I was given......Vinegar can dissolve some of the corrosion, so try this before pulling corroded zip and breaking it. If slider is disintergrated, (normally the teeth are plastic and ok) you can buy a replacement slider, or take one off a same size zip, like an old suitacase. As a preventitive, I have now sprayed all my kitebag zips with silicon lube, which doesn't harm the plastic bit of zip so I'm told. If storing for a while, put a dab of vaseline on slider. Brands who use metal zips.....WTF are you thinking, do you not actually kitesurf?

Haha - there is some truth in that. The kite gear is worth way more!
