Slingshot Tyrant vs. Wainman Magnum

Hi all,
I'm about to buy a surfboard and have narrowed my choices to a 2012 Slingshot Tyrant (5'11 - 6'1) and 2013 Wainman Magnum (5'10 - 6').

Has anyone tried both? Can you recommend board and sizes? Any other board recommendation?

I will use the board mainly for small waves, crappy surf and for cruising (and racing on it) in choppy waters. I'm 6' tall (1.82m) and 160lbs (72kg). Strapped and unstrapped. If the board can be used like a regular board (paddled, no kite) it would be a plus, so I don't have to travel with two boards.

Thanks so much!

You can proper surf a 6'1 Tyrant but it might be a little narrow for you if you aren't a good surfer. I don't think either of these boards are really made for crappy surf conditions that you are describing though. The Tyrant excels in bigger, better surf conditions in my opinion. I've had a lot of fun cruising around in some choppy river swell with my Tyrant but I'm not an advanced surfer by any means. I would go with the 5'11 Tyrant if I were you. It's been a long time since I've been on a Magnum so I don't know how they are in 2013.

Thanks,

How was the Magnum when you tried it?

I don't mind not being able to use the board for regular surfer. The most important thing will be good cruising in choppy waters and (I forgot to mention earlier) in LIGHT WINDS.

Thanks for your help

Such "good" normal waveboards dont work in light winds at all...

You need something else for that :thumb:

But for riding in small and choppy waves the Magnum is excellent IMO.

Some prefer big wide fish boards for this - but these will not go through chop like the Magnum (or similar), and you can also ride fast and jump awesome 8)

But for light winds ?
Nope - waveboards dont work IMO.

IF they do, they are not true waveboards, but too big or too flat and stiff - and wont give you the "right" feeling in the waves.

I have no experience with the Tyrant...

From what you have described, Have you looked at the Slingshot Celeritas? It would be a better choice IMO than the Tyrant in the conditions you have described.

@ Peter-F,
There's actually is very good pure wave board that excels in light wind. It's called the Firewire Sweet Potato. You are absolutely right about most hybrid/fish shapes with flat rockers. And, at first glance of the Sweet Potato, I thought the same. However, this shape will surprise you. It goes top to bottom almost like a standard short board, however, builds and maintains speed better than any hybrid or fish that I've ever ridden. So far, I've used it from 10-20 knots in small-shoulder high waves and the board puts on a grin on my face every time I've ridden it. Have a 5'4" which has about 35 liters of volume and works really well for my weight(200lbs) in light wind. Probably not the best shape for overhead or >.

@ O.P.
Most directional are too heavy for free-surf. However, that 2012 Tyrant(no inserts) felt as light as a surfboard. I did see a bunch of heel dents however and the guy said he just got it. So, the Tyrant with no inserts might not be that durable. Hence, the blow-out price of 370.00 for a brand new one on Ebay.

The Celeritas is designed for exactly what you're looking for. 5'8" or 5'11".

The Tyrant isn't great in light wind - my 6'1" Tyrant takes more wind than my 135 cm twintip.
