UK - best place(s) to kite / surf ?

Postby razorjack » Fri Jan 30, 2015 2:39 pm

Hi!
I'm moving to UK in a few weeks and I though about kite, as there is a lot of water :)
Which part of the UK has the best spots for kite and wave ?
Looking at the map, I'm thinking about staying in Bristol - close to south coast, close to Cornwall and of course Bristol Channel.
Am I right ?

Hi Razor

Can you live anywhere in the UK?

Bristol would be a great spot as you will have lots of choice within a couple of hours drive. Plus you will be on the best side of England and Wales for the wind.

I think you would be hard pushed actually for a better spot to live in order to kite.

The UK has fantastic spots all round its coast line so pretty much where ever you pitch up close to the coast you will have a surf spot near you.

Welcome to the UK :)

I think I can find a job in any big city, but the second important thing for me is mountain biking, so I'm looking for hills and mountains (and bike parks), so I'm planning to live near Wales (and its famous bikeparks/trails :) )

You should also seriously consider Cardiff then. Wales has got an abundance of great kiting spots for any wind direction - The Gower and Pembrokeshire have got beaches and waves that rival those in Devon & Cornwall but with no crowds and fewer restrictions. It's also that much closer to the likes of Afan, Brecon etc for the mountain biking.

Wales is an absolutly beautiful country and if your an outdoors man it has everything for you. :thumb:

Bristol is close to Wales so I still think that would be the best place to start. maybe be give yourself some travel time and have a look around.

Hi mate,

deffo check Cardiff, you will be much closer to both the beaches and the hills of S.Wales

City centre to both would be around 30mins and from Bristol around 60mins (more in evenings etc after work)

The beaches here work from SE around to NW mostly with surf (not usually too big) There are numerous mtb centres at Afan Argoed/Glyncorrwg/Cwmcarn/Brechfa etc and the awesome new Bike Park Wales

There are a growing number of us doing both...first choice kite but if no wind then we hit the hills just up the road.

Videos from here both kite and bike

There is a lot of coast to choose from.

Depends on your chosen kite/life/work balance.

For me, Cornwall & Devon are superb - Wales/the Gower is also v good.

Bristol is ok - but is not that close to a really good spot and ideally you are better off being closer to the beach - e.g. Truro/Newquay/Swansea/Poole/Southampton.
