Took 6 hours of lessons on vacation, now what?

Postby flossit » Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:57 pm

My city doesn't offer any kiteboarding lessons, however I feel fortunate enough to have covered the basics.. I learned basic kite control, body dragging, self rescue, launching from the beach/ water, landing the kite, upwind riding- both directions, and I had to eject from caught lines. I feel fairly self sufficient, however now that I am home there are no kite lessons in my area. Am I able to get a kite and begin practicing alone?

Thanks

Find a buddy in your area, you can help each other launch and land.

going upwind after 6 hrs? that's impressive!

I agree, find someone and help each other. Otherwise you will risk too much.

Where do you want to kite?

You are in better shape than many getting out from a course.
So yes - you are ready to get a kite and go out on your own - but not alone. Kite on a beach where there are other surfers and ask for help if in doubt - you will be fine.

Nice in 6 hrs, now you're ready to be on your own,
and I agree just make sure somebody is nearby for a while.
Don't fly or play at the beach it's not safe :nono:
So go the water, because distance is your friend :!:

Helmet.
PFD (life jacket) - there are some comfortable ones
at least 2 hook knives
Read up on weather forecasting and understand wind and clouds
Read all the accident and safety post on this forum! Some terrible ones very recently unfortunately
If in doubt rig small

Off ya go, do the above and you'll have a blast!

Always good to have someone with you. Even experienced, never hurts to have someone launch and land your kite although it can be self landed and launched. Self launching and landing does wear the kite where someone holding it THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING is much less stress on the kite.

A helmet is wise, plus a great place to mount a GoPro or other camera. A life vest if you are kiting in deep or shallow water (keeps you floating in deep water if you have to body drag to your board as big waves can block your vision where your board it and you are not worn out trying to stay above water; a vest in shallow water keeps you from dragging in the sand if you are doing a start).

Sounds like you are doing excellent going upwind both directions. Now, just get some hours of practice in and never let your guard down.

Have fun!
