Water start problems - can anyone help?

Postby dazarter » Mon May 27, 2013 10:53 am

Hi, im new here, im having a few problem starting my takoon reflex 12 m from the water in the lower end of its wind range (ca.12 knots with a gaastra x bar 2012...)

has anyone got any tips how to speed up the start, i've tried nearly every method i know and only manage to get it up when the wind gusts!

a great kite when up in the sky, does everything perfectly with good float!

regards

Darren

All kites are difficult to be launched from the water at their lower wind range limit. When you are underpowered, it is wise to stay near coast or not even kiting at all.

thanks for the reply -

i know all kites dont water start as well in low winds.....but compared to my other kites the takoon reflex is much harder to start, alot harder, my Kitefactiry maori can start backwards in 10 knots no problem :thumb: ! my reflex will not start backwards :-? !

the range for the reflex is 9-22 knots, 12 knots is at the lower end....

just wanted some tips to see if i can get it up a little earlier.....i do stay by the coast (or shoreline on lakes), its just annoying went the kite goes down and i have to drift in and start all over again!

Grab front lines by depower strap and pull hard as far back as you can then let go, this will make the kite tilt onto its back (you may need to walk/swim towards kite - do not let it go all the way onto its back) then pull a rear line and the tip will catch the air and star to come round into a relaunch position. Old school relaunch, lost on today's modern auto relaunch kites

If you get the kite to the launch position and it almost takes off, you can alternately pump the upper front and rear lines and it might lift off. I found it best to pump alternately so the kite stays tilted back about 10 degrees.

Good video above. The key is to grab the opposite front line and pull in. It really helps in very light wind.

Be aware that some kites relaunch better than others. The high performance ones like the Ozone Edge are often not very easy to relaunch, but the technique in the video helps.

The video shows this from standing on the beach. Much harder in the water, so it helps a lot if you have your board on your feet for some resistance.

go out it more wind. 12 knots is not enough for a 12m unless you weigh 50kg.

16+ knots and yourl be flying.
