When -- did the sport of kite boarding first begin ?

Where -- did our sport begin ?

WHO -- was the first to skip over the water on a board or water-ski
while being pulled by a kite ?

Legaignoux brothers were the first to create a kite that was water relaunchable, the first to make 4 line inflatable kites instead of 2 line kites, the first to make a bridled inflatable kite. They were kitesurfing prototypes in 1984 on the water. Peter Lynn was making kite buggy kites by 1987, but there is also the flexifoil stacker 6 from 1972 made by Ray Merry and Andrew Jones and was one of the first modern power foil kites and an inspiration to the Legaoignoix brothers when they saw a boat pulled by one. But you can go back further to 1948 with the nasa parawing, a kite/parachute thing rogallo developed for parachuting landers, but the design was used as a traction kite as it has been popular in the do it yourself stunt kiters getting into power kiting. The first unsupported greenland crossing using a traction kite and a sled was in 1988 using the nasa powerwing. The first crossings of all the great lakes was by Dan Eisaman in 1988 in an inflatable boat and a 4.8m Flow Form kite which is a big simple square open foil kite no relaunch, no upwind! But these directions, the flow form, the flexifoil, the nasaparawing while kiting on the water aren't really the originators of our style of kiting.

Legaignoux brothers are the ones we owe the most to. They brought the sport into the direction we use today. Cory Roessler is important too, tho his winching system of the Kiteski lost out to the Wipika in the marketplace.

There are some Really Good responses here ; it would appear that kites
have bin used by the Chinese for over 2,000 + years.

According to Wikipedia , it was back around , (1820 ) that George Pocock , used
kites to propel a cart on land, and ships in water ; they could also go Up-wind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitesurfing

If Ya Google Kiteboarding, Wikipedia will group it with kitesurfing and use
them interchangeably ; but then they go on to say it's the same as kite landboarding or
kite snowboarding.

When i questioned --Joe Faust-- over on the thread (new flysurfer), about
why his profile says he started kiting in 1963 ; he stated that The sport of kiteboarding
has been around way before 1963. He used Ben Franklin as an example :

http://soundcityreading.com/rsstories5-6.pdf

YES -- Ben got pulled by a kite across the pond ; but IS That kite boarding , or is it
what I call "Body-Dragging" , something we learn to do in order to retrieve our
board when we Fall ?

Since I flew my first kite when i was 5, should i have placed in my profile for this forum,
that i started kiting in 1957 ; or go with the spirit of the question and say 2004,which
is when i first kited on the water , while STANDING on a board ?

Should the question in the profile be modified to ask : "years Kite boarding" , instead
of years kiting ?

I'm thinking we need an actual definition for the sport of Kite Boarding, or the Joe Faust's
of the world will claim something spectacular when asked if they have ever
actually bin out on the water with a kite board ;
and here was his response :

Daily: hobby all. I put in about 8 hours daily on my hobby of kiting.

Sorry about the episode in OZ where my posts filled the page one week; since that episode, I have kept Davis' discipline that he and Scare arranged for my enthusiasm. Some enjoyed the posts, some were without the time to enjoy the flow. I take it from your tone that you might not have the time to mine my flow; feel free to skip over my posts; I have no agenda to force you to the kiting table that I am excited about. I am interested in your kiting, though. Keep me informed; thanks.

Notice that I am here in KiteForum as "rare" poster. It appears you do not want me to post in KiteForum. Is the KiteForum your special turf that would be bothered by my flow? What specific topic seems to grind against your temperament? [ ] ?

You are welcome to choose the one-penny option to get a $20 value classic:

Or if you see me at some kiting site, just mention the book to me and I will hand over a new copy to you without the postage-handling cost or penny, just free to you, Bille, as the supply lasts; right now I have over 1000 copies that I want to gift to kiteboarders.

The sport of kiteboarding has been around way before 1963.

Hey, Bille, why are you pressing for "STANDING" ?
Why not "Handing" "Reclining" "Sitting" ??

"Board" ? What is a "board"? Such will help in the history question. Long, wide, deep, flexibility, buoyancy, shape, fin count (0 or more), weight, color, uses of ..., cost, made by ..., durability, purposed, accidental, ? Do we really mean "board set" where the set may have a cardinal number of 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., n ? We have seen kiteboarders with the null board both while in the water and also while in the air. We have seen the board set with count of "one" as the most dominant player these days. However, many of us have seen the one-kiteboarder using a board set of count "2." Being recently proposed in another forum is a board set of count "2" with PIC set of "2" with a wing set of count 1 or more, but with two downing main lines from the kite's wing set.

KiteCat Two boards integrated allowing sitting.

And Bille, you are right to mention that a core safety skill for kiteboarding is with the board out of dominant use, that is, with perhaps board set of "0" cardinality while the "board" set becomes the water-wing called "body" in body-dragging or body tacking even; the body in water is a paravane or water-kite; the degree of control of bridling the body-paravane during the kiting sets up resultant paths as the body-board itself water-kites while being pulled by the air kite set.

Media choice? Water? Frozen water? Mud? Soup? Air? Fresh water? Salty water? Large swimming pool? Pond? Lake? Sea? Ocean? Ice sheet? Wet grass? Flooded streets? Sand? Snow water? Grass? Soil? Vital slime? Air and air? Mixed media? Same media for both the upper wing set and the lower wing set? Distinct media for the upper wing set of the kite systems from the media for the lower wing set (board-PIC complex)?

Because ((i think)),"Standing" on a surfboard OR kite board in the water, is what Most the people
on THIS forum consider as their sport of kite boarding ; that's Most Everyone but YOU.

If just being pulled by a kite would constitute the sport of kite boarding, then that
would indicate this sport was invented a LONG time ago about 1820 or so. It
would also indicate that YOU have bin a kite-boarder since 1963, and i'm saying
you Haven't.

Actually --- i'm saying that you have Never stood on a surfboard or kiteboard
or even a water-ski, while being pulled by a kite on the water ?
If you Have, then show me a picture ; one from 1963 would be Great, then we could
all marvel at your accomplishment !!

Learning to kiteboard with double prosthetic, was the HARDEST thing i Ever
did in my Entire Life ; so reading how you have bin kiteboarding since 1963
kinda down-right , "Pisses me Off" , and i'm out-right calling Ya a Liar !!!

"Yes, kiting since 1963."
No lie, Bille.

But you are becoming commander of your personal definitions and requirements, set up a paper tiger to burn, burn it. You are welcome to do all the paper-tiger constructions you wish and burn them. But when you then make a personal attack on a forum member and call them a "liar" for not meeting your paper-tiger construction, then you may have gone against forum rules on personal attacks. You might consider retracting the attack, or not; up to you. Take a moment and notice that my record is not one of reaching for plaudits for myself, but for the plaudits of thousands of others, my style. I seek to extend the accomplishments of others. In 1958-59 my board and also barefoot water kiting behind a powered kite was in Newport beach at the grace of UCLA alumni entertaining me, so that I might go to their chosen school. That is not what I was counting for "1963".

I am really ...and have been... totally inspired by your accomplishments, Bille. No doubt. Have been for the years I have known your record. Your story defines a quality sector of kiteboarding history, but does not define all of kiteboarding; there is more to kiteboarding than just any one person's local experience. I do not have privilege of knowing EVERYONE on this forum; and so, I do not dare constrain their kiteboarding activity to the limits of any one person's taste or style or equipment or purpose or perception; there is no need to confine kiteboarding to some small sector of kiteboarding.

SHOW me a Picture of You kite boarding ; preferably one from 1963.
Or are you just gonna keep saying : "Yes, kiting since 1963."

Well -- then i should say : I have bin kiting since 1957 ; was 5 years old when i flew my First kite
NO
It was 2004 when i first stood on a kite board while being dragged by a kite across
the water. And that is NOT me in your picture.

Bille

Ps: I'm won't be on the water till next week, after i finish building a new leg to replace
the one i broke last week,(while Kite boarding) : i'm about 40% finished and waiting
for epoxy to dry. So i got Plenty of time to argue with Ya Joe.

Your NOT as smart as --Fo-- though, so i'm getting kinda Bored here !!
