I went kiting today but the wind dissapeared and i was not able to surf up wind. I swam to my kite and headed to shore. But is this the easiest way to do this? Are there other techniques?

Should have done a deep water self-rescue after pulling the safety to disable the kite and prevent an accident if the wind picked back up:

Here's a great video of a self-rescue in real time. Using the kite as a sail to pull you back to shore would have saved you a lot of energy:

A lesson from a professional school may be a good investment! Seriously.

Selfrescue with sail - never had the need to, but a good tool to have.

Keep in mind that when the wind drops it may be followed by a change in wind direction.

On the water this can mean offshore, and that can mean letting the go of the kite (happened to some at local spot), or at least total pack down and no sail.

On the beach, this can mean all the kites can blow off the beach.

At a lowwind day in egypt where we were 50 kiters, most had left their kites on the beach to go diving or something - a few of us were left behind chilling with all-inclusive. Suddenly one mentions that the wind has dropped completely and it might be changing direction - and that we should think about the kites - good thinking - suddenly we were frantically running around flipping 50 kites as the wind picked up in that very unusual direction. Wasn't even a local who had this insight.

Some have recently taken to race boards dramatically increasing the chance of a swim - a few kiters had to pack down and swim across the fjord and hitch a ride back with the local ferry.
