Which Tube Kites are slow?

Postby Toby » Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:17 pm

Besides the Foils, which tube kites are turning slow in 2013 and 2014?

Not everyone wants fast.

Or at least kites with settings for slow on the kites.

In the sizes you fly Toby surely they are all slow?

But i guess high aspect kites with no pullies.

Just cut you bar down so you have a couple stubs each end....

Switchblade is my vote but also is kind of cool how high the kite jumps easily.

All the bad ones  (almost just joking)

For freestyle with big kites (>10m2) they can not be too fast IMO, and I think almost everybody (except Toby) want fast kites in these sizes.

On smaller kites below 10m2, it can often suit better with less "hysterical" turning kites, agree.

And most kites are made this way today, so they have a "balanced" response in the smaller sizes.

For waves it is different though - and most of us use our standard length bar with the 4-5-6m2 kites too, as why bother change as it works great turning REALLY fast.

In freestyle (or for beginners) everything can be more tricky if too fast, and difficult to land and time tricks, so here it makes sense to "slow down" the small kites :thumb:

Regarding race kites, it is a compromise - as you will often sell some turning speed because of higher AR.
So a balance between performance, and the desire for a good efficient turning kite on downwind legs :naughty:

...I tried the Naish Draft 17m, its slow and heavy on the bar, not my cup of tea (unfortunately so, I had high hopes for it)! :D

You could also slow any kite down just by using a smaller bar as well... very common in wake style since you don't want the kite to move, just like a cable pull

You can slow the kite (turning) a bit down with a shorter bar, yes.

But it does not actually make the kite slower by the same amount you shorten the bar.

Difficult to explain, but one could say, that if you hold your hands at the bar ends (you dont normally, I know), then you should pull with exactly the same amount and force for a given kite, no matter if a short or long bar :thumb:

So here it does not slow the kite down 8)

Because we grab the bar further away from the bar ends, it still somehow feels like the kite is slowed down a tad yes, but not that much really.

So unless you turn the kite with a lot of bar angle, one could also claim that short or long bar does not change the turning speed (feel) of the kite :naughty:

It IS very tricky in fact, because of this two-faced issue.

Somehow small fast kites are still very (too much for many) live and twitchy for freestyle (but fine in waves and for high jumps), even with a short bar.
