New Heavyweight group forum. Introductions...

Postby bigjohn » Thu Jul 11, 2013 12:36 am

A new place for us big guys to discuss gear options and necessary equipment upgrades. I've found that people less than 210lbs (95kg) can't usually offer usable advice on gear because generally the weight differences make gear choices vastly different.

I'm 6'5" 260lbs. I would consider my current style a cross between freeride & wave.
I ride mostly strong wind gusty inland lakes in southern Alberta, Canada. (My local spots)

Current Gear:
Kites - 2013 Ocean Rodeo Razors 12m, 9m, 7m
(I've found kites that sit deep in the window work well for my size and style)
Boards - 2010 Ocean Rodeo Mako King
2007 Best Ltd 144 x 44
Second hand custom Surfboard 6'3" x 22" x 2 3/4"
Harness - Ocean Rodeo Session 2.0 size XL

Hoping to spread the word about this new group forum for us heavyweights.

Big John

... hey big John, nice work and cool idea!

We're almost the same size I'm 6"4" and 265 pounds!! :o

You are so right in what gear works for us types, I'm sure there are others like us out there who would be interested in stuff like that,,,, well done for starting this!!!

My current favourite gear that stands up to me:

Kites:
North Dyno 18m
North Rebel 14m, 12m, 9m and rarely used 7m

Boards directional::
Airush Sector 66 and 60 (ultra low winds)
Airush Cypher 5'10" surf board (low to medium winds)
Cyclone 6' surfboard (high winds)

Boards Twin Tip:
Underground 144 x 46 cm twin tip (low - medium winds)
North Sky Pro 138 x 43 cm (high winds)

I used to do tricks (sort of) and jumps/kiteloops but getting too hard on my aging body, so getting into waves and chilled free riding is more my thing now, much better on the knees and ankles.

cheers for now, and spreading the word,

Robbie :thumb:

Big John
I am only 205 but sometimes feel alone being surrounded by 100 lb kids, great idea to start this section, when i first started out i had trouble getting upwind because of a flimsy noodle board i had...

anyways i was wondering if i could pick your brain on the razor's, i want a kite the boost good, has massive low end and loops like a C kite, what wind range do you fly your 12 and 10 in? where do you find yourself having fun with it jumping and trying out rolls/loops?

my main kite is a 12m switchblade and a 135/43 lunacy, start holding ground at 14 knots upwind in the ocean but having fun around 16/17, Florida air...

Howdy, fellow Clydesdales! I am (almost officially) The Heaviest Kiteboarder in Japan. Not The Fattest (which is nice), cos there's a little butterball I've seen in Mie who's as tall as they are wide. Still not sure if they are male or female either...

Anyway... I'm 6'1" and 120kg/265lbs too :( down from what I used to be when I started though!
Ride mostly on the lake, occasionally on the ocean. Freeriding with some simple stunts and occasionally play in the waves... no real surfing yet. I like jumping as high as I can and trying to do rotations at the same time :D

Kites...
Flysurfer Speed3 21, 15, 12 and a Psycho4 19.
Ocean Rodeo Flite 17.5
Cabrinha 2011 Crossbow 16, 13 and 10
And a Core GT 7m that I've never used

Boards...
Flydoor3 XL 170x50 (Still have the old 2nd model, use it for a travel board)
OR Mako 150 (mutant!)
Aboards Z-series 140x42.5 (replaces my Flyradical3 138x42 as my upper wind-range board)
2011 Slingshot Dialer 5'10" (just got it!)

Harnesses...
Used a XXL Dakine Fusion since I started, have had 2010, 11, 12 and now 13 models.
Have a 2012 XXL Renegade now too... and an XL OR Session2 but I can only just get the straps to close and don't feel secure using it that way :o

What he said. Love my Flite but want more height!

6'4" and currently 250lbs but usually a tad less.

17m Zephyr is practically the only kite I use. Also have Waroos - 13m & 9m.

Board Litewave Wing 153x45. Also first board was Best Spark 139x40 which along with the 13m nearly broke my heart before I realised I needed more oomph than the regular sized rider.

5'11", 105 kg / 230 lbs.

Kites...
Flysurfer 15m S3
North Rebels: 11m and 8m

Board:
Shinn Supershinn 135 at the moment
My Spleene Door 154 was lost at sea...and is missed

Mystic harness, XL

Riding:
Mostly the North Sea
Some flat water, some waves, and lots of chop
Free ride mostly with some bigger jumps and working on the rotations

I find a lot of kite brands 'flap' when I stick in a hard edge....so like ones that are really solid. Best so far have been the Norths and OR's. The Flysurfers are solid too but different...an acquired taste...but worth it in my view. I'm eager to see what the 18m S4 is like as I might shift up to it from the 15m. Or...I might try a Dyno.

6'3" 240#'s been riding since 2005.

Kites: Rebel 14, 10, 7. BWS 12, looking to get a 18
Boards: Sector 60, 6' Custom Kite Stretch Thing, OR Mako 150w
XXL Dakine Fusion w/J Bar

Deff took me a while to dial in my quiver, lots of trial and error on the surfboard front. Production kite surfboards arent designed for the big boys. Length doesnt matter,, tail width, hip width, rockers and thickness are the keys so we dont need to be fully powered to make them work. I had a beautiful 6'1" Naish Global but needed to be 110% powered, sold it to a buddy whos about 180# and he loves it.

Cheers, BulkyBoys Rule!
