It is roughly 3000 km from SPI to Cape Hatteras so 26 - 30 hours depending on how fast you drive.
I don't know about SPI but Hatteras is good from April to Nov (only cause that is when it is warm enough) There is a good chance of Tropical storms/ Hurricanes in both places from Sept to Oct though.

SPI is good in the spring. During the summer months it does get wind but it will be light. Your better off going to Corpus Cristi for wind during the summer. Both places get about the same surf but the surf is best in the winter after a northern front blows it out then the south winds bring it back stacked up and clean.

For the OBX fly into Norfolk, Virginia, you'll have to rent a car and drive a few hours to get on island...and I'd say Brownsville for SPI.

For OBX, I always come June-July, great wind and it gets really warm.
This trip, June has been great with over 25 days of riding mostly on 6.5/7m in the Ocean and 7/10m in the sound.
The ocean temperature now is about 70/71 around Nags head/ Kill devil hills, warmer in the south.
Sound side this is a bath as usual!
Winter time is good too and has better waves, but this is way too cold for me!

Yup it's nice and warm... too windy, had to cut my trip short because I only brought a 12 and 9 lol, was struggling to ride since it was nuking every day! June/July are definitely great for OBX

hahaha driving from SPI to Hatteras, thats awesome. the state of Texas is bigger than your entire country!
not that you shouldnt do it, it would be an awesome trip, but a lot of driving.
brownsville (BRO) or harlingen (VIA) for flying to SPI, car rental a big plus but not necessary,
mid october until early Jan, end of March until mid June pretty well assured good riding. full suit med weight (not necessarily needed, but just in case) after nov 15 and before may 1

If you drive then take I-10 to the Pensacola Ft Walton area aand get some kiting in on amazing white sand beaches!!!
Of course the wind is a bit iffy in June / July - better in April & May

The kiting conditions are not that much different from each other to bother going to both locations.
I live in Texas and would rather kite in Hatteras in the summer.
The ocean is better there and there is less trash on the beaches.
There are a lot of beautiful things to go see from Hatteras, much closer to get to all kinds of things to do.
Rent a car and go up and down Skyline Drive in the Smoky Mountains in Virginia.
Lots of culture in Washington DC, the Smithsonian, etc.
