Ozone Edge exploded in mid air

Postby Hawaiis » Tue Jun 03, 2014 9:35 am

After one year and about 100 sessions, the Ozone Edge exploded in the air, the Teijin Techno Force Ripstop canopy does look weaker than Cabrinha's from day 1. The 17m was the most used kite. Now I have to get the 19m. Autopsy reveals the canopy was joined to the Dacron leading edge by stitching and it ripped from the stitching.

Have you spoken to Ozone or did you choose to just post this as information?

100 sesh is pretty reasonable lifespan, especially if you tomahawked or had it thru the rinse cycle a few times.

Damage looks repairable.

This things usually start with a pinhole somewhere but there is a detail I don't like about how they stitch the canopy to the leading edge tape. They use regular zigzag instead of triple step zigzag. OK its glued but the glue might go with the UV that's one point and the other is that regular zigzag opens up the needle hole more then triple step zigzag. I have a ripped Edge on my cutting table that looks like it went from the needle hole of regular zigzag seam. Check yours if the rip ends exactly on the needle hole.

It does look like it started right on the seam, from the picture. Bummer.
How much weight can they save with single ZZ stitch? Not enough for that I think.

Is that the same kite that was in the trees?

Hawaiis

I have the 19m and love the kite but I will warn you don't think your getting a tough kite. They are light and build to race not last. I have added dracon in many places to help with the wear.

Hot tip never self launch the kite on the beach if you have to launch from the water.

Great flying, boosting and glide kite. Tough no.

Regular zigzag in this area is a mistake no doubt about it. I have an idea how to stitch canopy to the leading edge that would prevent other problems that I've seen but I am keeping it to myself. I have learned some things from kite repairs but I have experience from sewing sails, boat tops and leather that allow me to pinpoint the problem and find the solution. There is also a trend to close leading edges with overlapping webbing tape which is also problematic in my view. It doesn't contribute to the seam strength but creates production issues like ability to inspect tension and skipping by the operator. Also if you add the webbing, the size of the needle has to go up for it not to brake and you don't want that because if you punch bigger than needed holes in dacron it will run from under the thread.

Have they gone to better stitching in newer models or is it the same?
