I get out very early (pre-7am), but have never connected it to any sort of "patrol". It's just a way to get out around my job and family responsibilities. A more appropriate name would be a "no points ride", if I make it home before 9:00 am.

Calling an early morning ride a "Dawn Patrol" is like calling an afternoon ride "Storming the Beach"

Call it what you want, but know that you sound like an idiot when you use an 40 year old surfing term, or compare flying a kite during peace-time on a sunny beach to a military operation.
