cover every possible wind with Naish kites

Postby mzll » Sun Aug 04, 2013 4:32 pm

hi kite buddies,

i'm based in NYC, and i regularly go kitesurfing at plumb beach, seagate, breezy point, coney island....

i use my 2011 Naish Parks (8+12), and the 12 is my regular NYC size. but it always feels like the 12 Park is "weak". compared to other 12s, it almost behaves like a 10 for me. all the lines are connected to "more grunt" and most bar pressure, and still, when other friends are using their 10s, i'm sometimes struggling to keep the 12 even up in the air... does one have an idea what i do wrong? i weigh around 175lbs-80kg.

now i'm considering to buy a low wind kite for the summer months, size between 15-19m, in order to not buy a new bar, i consider the Naish Fly 15. but i don't wanna end up with another weak kite.

does one of you have experience with the Fly?

thanks guys!!

2011 park is widely reported as a high end biased kite with the only stand out criticism being its lack of low end power.

I ride Naish kites (Rides). I'm having the same problem as you being in NJ. I considered the Naish Fly, but I ended up buying the BRM Cloud 17 because it apparently has better low-end then the Fly and its also 400 bucks cheaper. It works with the Naish Bar too since the lines are all the same length. So excited to test it out soon.

Sizing for the 2011 Park was wrong. The 12m was really a 11m, the 10m a 9m... and so on. Hence the lack of bottom end compared to the same sizes from other brand. Plus the bar with 20m line length in some case...making it worse.
But for me the Park 2011 10m was a "magic kite" at this time. I am riding Park almost exclusively from this point :thumb:

The Fly is a great lightwind kite with good low down power and decent upwind and would fill that bottom end gap you have.
Have tried various big kites and they aren't as much fun either.
The Fly comes with line extensions that give you a much better low end and used without them it feels like a smaller more nimble kite that doesn't feel too overpowering in stronger winds.
this is a fun kite that is worth having in your quiver, and won't disappoint.
The only downside is (other than a lot of pumping) it is not as good unhooked in lighter winds, as landing needs a little sheeting out to promote it reengaging on landing, hooked in this is not a problem.
Not a Naish pimp - as quite a slingy fan but have had alot of time on the Fly and has saved many sessions- also have sold my SS Glide because it's not really needed anymore

luv

Fly is a great kite. At 200lb I could ride it in very light winds. This year I chose to go with the Draft 17, but have not tried it yet. TO me the real fun thing on it was that it would still make me able to jump and pull my lamo TT tricks in light winds...

The new Parks are way more powerful than the old ones, so +1 to what Phil was saying.

thanks for your input guys!

i didn't know that the 2011 parks had a reputation to be weak, i bought them spontaneously on maui for a very good deal, and i have A LOT of fun with them. only these summer months in NY are frustrating.

i'll keep an eye out for the Fly then, and check on the 17 cloud as well.

have fun!

Many love their Parks for waveriding !

This is only possible because it has awesome windrange, and again, only possible because they dont have much low end.
And lighter riders will love the windrange even of the bigger kites.

So if you get a kite with more low end, you will miss out on the windrange (and ability in waves where really important).

You can not get both, and have to decide :naughty:

Would just be sure you know that it is horses for courses, and nothing wrong with your Parks :thumb:

hey peter!

don't misunderstand, i'm not going to get rid of my parks, i like them very much. i only need one more kite for those soft summer months in NY. the last 4 sessions, i pretty much inflated the kite, only to find out that the wind is not strong enough for me.

i need to get a bigger kite to keep myself busy during summer weekends!!

:)

A lot of buzz around the BRM Cloud, especially the 17m for super light wind.
It is an option if you are not afraid by the "avant-garde" strutless construction... and it match perfectly with a Naish bar :thumb:
