Check out the WeatherFlow Wind Meter testing in Gainsville, Fl. The WeatherFlow Wind Meter is an anemometer that fits in your pocket. It works with iOS devices like, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPads. This short edit contains everything from tunnel assembly to the second we started testing, right down to final smoke and aerodynamics visualization. Much more to come!

Here is a full review / article from board-mag.

New on the shelf for 2014 the Weatherflow Wind Meter http://weatherflow.com/windmeter gives any Android or iOS smartphone user a portable and reliable anemometer in your pocket.

The idea behind the Weatherflow Wind Meter http://weatherflow.com/windmeter is to give avid weather watchers accurate wind readings without any hassle. This compact device simply plugs into the headphone jack of your iPhone, iPad or Android handset without the requirement for batteries or any other accessories.

WeatherFlow Wind Meter

Once the Wind Meter is plugged into your headphone jack launch the “Wind Meter” http://weatherflow.com/windmeter application (free on iTunes and the Play Store) from your home screen and you are ready to go. The app is very basic but not in a bad way. Settings, history and readings are all easily accessible from the main menu. Inside the settings menu you can change your primary activity ie. kite, surf, windsurf.

That's cool. Theoretically nice potential for crowd-sourcing nowcasts, or even guiding models/developing human interpretations.
But. Lack of at least a 3m stick to put it on, and likely a somewhat random user base,
suggests GIGO. Fun to share and log sessions though...

So I bought one of these and it doesn't work with 2 of my phones and only on one of my friends 'phone. (Androids)

So not sure if there's a disclaimer anywhere in the Google Play Store about needing Android 4.0 ICS or above for it to work. If there isn't, there should be......
Bummed this thing doesn't work. The Google PlayStore reviews are pretty poor due to compatibility issues.

I like the ten dollar
wind meter that is a
tiny ping pong ball
inside a plastic tube-omometer

Think outside the box and bring something really unique to the market!
I think you are wrong here. Since Vaavud has an API that you can access all you really have to do is make your own app, and access the information from the device to make it far useful beyond any handheld windmeter that I have seen.
Tautologies, we have *arguably* the best weather API on the planet. This includes the ability to make onsite reports with the http://weatherflow.com/windmeter, get forecasts across a multitude of models etc. There is a hugely significant design flaw in a particular competitors product, this has already sealed their fate with a handful of large industry players. Inertial mass, and aerodynamic design come into play more than you could ever imagine in a product like this. Our design is accurate to +/- 0.5% of the reading or 0.2 mph at up to 15° off-axis. We also provide access to report data from just about any device.

Our friends at TUAW have done a great job comparing & reviewing our http://weatherflow.com/windmeter.

Ryan,

A return isn't necessary, but I appreciate the offer to stand by the product and take it back. I would like to hang onto it as I'm due for a new phone very soon.
I currently have a Sony Xperia Mini Pro and a Sony Xperia Active. The Weatherflow does work off my wife's Sony Xperia Sola. So I know the device itself works, it just doesn't want to play with my "older" Droids.

I am purchasing a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact when they hit the States in a few weeks, I'm hoping the WeatherFlow is compatible with this phone.
I think the product is very cool and will save me $80 from buying a Kestrel anemometer, so I'll hold out for it working in the future.

Maybe I missed it somwhere on the WF website, but I didn't see a compatibility list.

Thanks for working with me.

hate to be the naysayer here...I JUST bought this unit brand new..was super psycched to use it..have samsung galaxy3 and ICS operating system. downloaded the free APP. Thing works right away but CONSIISTENTLY reads at least 3-4 KNOTS less than my skywatch..and less than my eyes and the water texture tell me. Ive been windsurfing, kiting and paragliding for over 13 years...so I know what 12 knots feels like.

Thought for SURE there would be a way to CALIBRATE the meter...at least through the softtware interface...but there is NOT.

My friend bought one about the same time, used it with his Iphone...same results..reads low. YES we are facing the wind, YES we are not in front of buildings, YES we have been reading the wind for many years.

anyone else have this issue? anyway to Calibrate?

its a great idea....wish it gave me true readings.
thanx for any insight...

kyrojoe
