Beginner kite list - Please help to choose

Postby mboncalo » Thu Apr 17, 2014 9:25 am

Hi,
I'm planning to make a kite trip this summer and i want to buy a second kite. I already own a North Vegas 16m 2008 with a waist harness and 5th line bar

I was searching for a smaller kite and i cannot decide which is better for the price. Here is the list:

liquid force havoc 12m 2012 +bar 755
liquid force envy 12m 2012 +bar 839
takoon reflex 12m 2012 +bar 839
cabrinha vector 11m kite+bar 2012 678
rrd vision 12m 2012 + bar 648
cabrinha crossbow 10m/11m 2012 kite +bar 698
rrd passion 13m +bar 2013 870
Liquid Force Envy 12m 2013 +bar+leash 969
Liquid Force NRG 12m 2013 +bar+leash 1099
Naish ride 12m 2013+bar 798
Ozone instinct edge 11m 2008 +bar 400

What I want is good handling/relaunch kite with a decent grunt and wind range.
All the gear is new except the last one.
I must mention i do not have any experience in kitesurfing, just with kite handling practice, I will take more lessons just that i feel more confortable using my gear.

Thank you.

The Naish Ride looks good value for money. Good allround kite suitable for beginners and Naish have good build quality. Might also be worth looking on your local EBay.

I'm just wondering about your first kite... I don't think a 5 line kite is a good idea for a beginner - that's one more line to untangle when you get into trouble and have to self rescue. Also, what's with the huge size? Are you much heavier than average or is your main kite area very low average wind speed?

It's also a good idea to have both kites able to work with either bar. That way if you have a line break or other problem, you can just switch bars. The Ride would be a good choice, but obviously the bars are not interchangeable. But I sure wouldn't look for just 5 line kites because you already bought the Vegas.

huge kite size? i am 135-140 lbs and i ride a 12 or 13m >85% of my sessions

all those kites look fine, go with whichever is the newest and best value for you. none of those will hold you back from progressing

Get a Rebel, will already work with your 5th line bar and it will be leaps and bounds easier to fly than a 08 vegas especially if you can find one post 2010. Also a 2008 16M vegas is NOT a beginner friendly kite.

I don't get why/how people have sooooo much trouble with 5th lines. It's only a really a minor thing to think about when you're walking out your lines, it's not going to get tangled flying, and if you got into a wave relaunch situation that it's going to tangle the 5th, 4 lines will also tangle.

the difference is your kite won't tear in half with 4 lines. ive seen 4 maybe 5 kites torn in half in the last 2 years from it, and we dont even get big waves here. no point in 5 lines these days unless it's a c kite or you're a safety kook that is terrified of kiteboarding
