Ever since the law makers ban shark fins in Hawaii, there have been noted increases of shark attacks. I guess the law makers think surfer's lives are not as important as the sharks. Sharks are not even endangered like the turtle or the Monk seals they prey on.

My good friend who is an instructor was riding with a student and a 15-20 foot tiger was cruising the boneyard. He chased it out by flying his kite just over its head several times. Another 12 foot tiger was seen surfacing and chasing fish in pro pool and a board was attacked and dragged underwater by another 12 foot tiger. All in the same day. Beach was closed by lifeguards.

Just accept that there are sharks in the waters, and that we are not generally on their list. They are smart hunters.
Randomly killing sharks for fins or otherwise is a disgrace.
I've seen sharks many times....several while kiting, and they are generally more skittish than we are.

Ka'a Point always had sharks. They stay a bit offshore and can be found between the harbor jetty and the Wailuku Kahului sewage plant.

WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Officials have closed two miles of beaches in Makena following a shark attack on a snorkeler at Palauaea Beach, also known as "White Rock."

The woman visiting from Germany was attacked by a shark Wednesday, resulting in the loss of part of her arm.

Beaches have been closed for one mile in each direction of Palauea Beach, from Makena Beach Resort to Mana Kai Resort. Maui DOCARE personnel will be warning the public on the beach until dark to remain out of the water.

The incident happened at about 4:40 p.m.

Officials say the 20-year-old woman was transported to an emergency room at Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition with her right arm severed. She was helped to shore by two male friends who were nearby in the water, and a kayaker. The water was choppy with limited visibility at the time of the attack.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources says county lifeguards are working with the Maui Fire Department to put up a helicopter in order to fly the coastline and search for the shark.

Thursday morning, state and county officials will return to the beach and conduct an assessment for any presence of sharks and if nothing is sighted, may decide to reopen the beach by noon.

Aquatic resources staff will attempt to interview the victim on the circumstances of the incident at the earliest possible opportunity once doctors have completed their exam and treatment.
