Kitesurfing in NYC

Postby zoharl » Mon Aug 19, 2013 1:31 am

Hi,

I am moving to near NYU (and I'm new to the US).

- Any tips about close spots in the area (by public transportation)?
- What are the main seasons?
- Average wind strength?
- Average number of wind days per week?
- Water temperature?
- Where can I buy/sell used equipment?

Thanks,
Zohar

closest spot to manhattan is plumb beach, in sheepshead bay. however you get there, by car, train, or hovercraft, don't kite after it rains, as sewage overflows drain into jamaica bay, making water hazardous. i made that mistake, and ended up with at staph infection on my face. haven't been there since...

good luck. enjoy nyc. :thumb:

Definitely get in contact with the good folks at NY Kite Center. I was visiting NYC for a few days in May and joined them for one day on the Great South Bay (by Amityville).

They've got miles and miles of amazing slicks there if you like buttery flat water riding. If you like waves, apparently you just skip over to the other side to the beach.

Talk to them about normal weather, but wind was 15-20 knots throughout the day (and pretty steady), air temps about 60F, needed a 4/3mm wetsuit, and probably best to have booties since there are lots of shells in the water. They told me that's typical for spring and fall. I heard that the summers bring light thermals and warmer water temps.

Hope this helps!

In the 80's I lived on the upper west side, on west 79th street. I would walk down with my windsurfing gear to the 79th street boat launch and launch from there. Sail over to NJ and back. Used to get super ill from the water, ended up down in midtown a couple of times, and walking back through some pretty sketch areas in a wetsuit while carrying my equipment.

Tons of great places to kite in NYC, NJ and Long Island area.

Hi,

There are few places where you can get within an hour and a half by public transportation from Manhattan. For south, east winds: Plumb Beach
For North/West: Seagate, Cross Bay blvd, or Breezy Point

1-2 windy days in the summer per week and 3-4 windy days in the spring/fall per week.
summer time: 12 - 17 m kties | shorty
spring, fall 10 - 12m kites | 5/4 mm wetsuit
winter 8-12m kites | 6/5 mm wetsuit or drysuit

For the community checkout kitehood http://kitehood.com/community. Locals are friendly, just introduce yourself when you get on the beach.
