Hi guys I am a beginner kiteboarder, have had 6 hours of lessons, and managed to get up on the board for a total of about 10 seconds. I live in Toronto, and most of my training was in Wasaga beach, if people are familiar with the location. My question is I am heading to Sao Miguel, Azores (Portugal), and my girlfriends cousin wants me to bring my equipment so I can kiteboarddown there, with my experience what advise would someone might give on this? It might help to have someone respond who has been there before. I know the water is completely different, but if there was a chance to practice I would consider bringing my stuff, as it would be a great experience, or not. lol. let me know guys.

I don't think there are many people kiting in Azores. I've been there 3 or 4 times for work and it was windy, but I didn't even take my kites as I knew I wouldn't have the chance to kite.

Here is some info:

And a post from a few years back here in Kiteforum.

Go for it, Azores kiting looks great in pictures:

perfect for a beginner who can stay on the board 10 seconds!!

Ok just from looking at maps and pictures, seriously you could try the Milicias beach by ponta delgada, mentioned in the earlier post, IF you could stay on the board and ride upwind and not hit swimmers or rocks at the end of the beach.
But for now you might be biting off more than you could chew imo.
Sorry if that sounds negative, but it doesn't look like a great beginner setup.
Be very cautious if you try it.

bwd, I hear you, I thought it might be a stretch, but would love to try it there, and say I did it. I guess not having anyone else there doing it, even makes it more of a concern. My kite is 14m as well, so I am really limiting myself.

Well, if you take your gear, it might work out to use if conditions are just right, but don't be afraid to take it and end up not using it if the stars don't align, or the waves get big, wind is too much etc.
Either way have a great trip

yeah I am thinking about taking. i think Sata airlines it might be free, if it is not costly I will take just in case. I am just searching for a kite travel bag so if I get that and confirm pricing with airline and it is not much I will do it.

So hurricane Alex is going to hit Azores, and then I began looking into the island. Apparently the best winds are from feb to april.

Anyone have any additional info? Im looking for a place to go in march and may add this to the list...

A buddy of mine went there - he's a surfer. Scored some nice waves but told me he didn't see a lot of kiting potential - steep rocky cliffs and very small beaches, so not a lot of room for launching or error! But for experienced kiters it is possible, there's some vids online if I remember correctly.

I have been to Sao Miguel, Azores twice, since this first post. I have seen kiters in Ribeira Grande, Sao Migual, I think you need to be fairly experienced kiter to tackle the ocean there. I know in Ponta Delgada the cities main beach is more calm. I am heading there in August, and I am bringing my gear. Shawn 13, I will email you about Azores. Also the one time i was there they had a surfing competition.
