What caught my eye was the no-case waterproof to 30m
You read it wrong. That's simply the IP67 certificate - 1 meter depth for 30 minutes... I don't think this camera brings anything new to the table. Aside from not being a GoPro, with which a lot o users (me amongst them) have problems with freezes. Lost a lot of sessions...
Garmin used to be a name that I would trust in their products. I think they've become really second rate in the last 5 years. Their Edge 800 cycling GPS/computer is such an overpriced pile of crap, I can't belive they sell any of them. My wife's $500 Garmin car GPS still uses maps that look like a cartoon and gives incorrect directions constantly.
I had high hopes for their cell phone a few years back, that flopped miserably.
I think they're a little too late to the party, and if you're late, you better bring next level. This thing (spec or size) doesn't appear to be anything special.

Ah, same as the Roam 2 then . . . which is $200.
Drift does a version (Ghost?) that doesn't need a waterproof case and has the WiFi and screen too. But no GPS etc.
On the Contour Roam 2 you need a computer to change the shooting mode.
In any head to head I've seen, the Drift looks like garbage. I can't remember if it was the 'HD Ghost' or the previous model though. I'd look into it before purchasing.
Of course, there's the Monoprice cam; which apparently has a build quality to match its $100 price. And it's on backorder. Still, I'd probably still get one of those before the Roam 2--at least you can change shooting modes in the field.
Cam people, *cough*Rick I*cough* any experiences or recommendations?
I know the GoPro is the 'gold standard' and has all the mounts; but what a dumb form factor. There's no way to unobtrusively mount the thing--and then you need the housing. If I wanted a hunk of polycarbonate hanging off my forehead I would have bought a helmet from Gath.
