What caught my eye was the no-case waterproof to 30m - no more fogging :naughty: but $3-400? Hope the IQ is good!

This thing looks sick. Already waterproof, gps tracking, accelerometer. At the same price as a gopro seems like a no brainer.

You read it wrong. That's simply the IP67 certificate - 1 meter depth for 30 minutes... I don't think this camera brings anything new to the table. Aside from not being a GoPro, with which a lot o users (me amongst them) have problems with freezes. Lost a lot of sessions...

Garmin used to be a name that I would trust in their products. I think they've become really second rate in the last 5 years. Their Edge 800 cycling GPS/computer is such an overpriced pile of crap, I can't belive they sell any of them. My wife's $500 Garmin car GPS still uses maps that look like a cartoon and gives incorrect directions constantly.

I had high hopes for their cell phone a few years back, that flopped miserably.

I think they're a little too late to the party, and if you're late, you better bring next level. This thing (spec or size) doesn't appear to be anything special.

At first look I could not find the most important specification (IMO), namely the focal length and aperture ?

Assume it is quite wide angle, and fixed, but important for our use to know

Anyone who can clarify this ?

They dont clarify. This came off their website

'WideVü Lens

Catch your action, up close and personal or
big-picture panoramic. This 9-element glass lens shoots in three modes: Wide, Medium
and Narrow."

Okay, so it sounds like a very wide angle, but 170 degree like the go-pro or less ?

And then a software "narrowing" most likely :-?

I've seen some of the locals here got one, will ask what he think about it.

Hrm, I've been looking for an action cam which doesn't require a housing. This may be the ticket!

Ah, same as the Roam 2 then . . . which is $200.

Drift does a version (Ghost?) that doesn't need a waterproof case and has the WiFi and screen too. But no GPS etc.

FYI:

On the Contour Roam 2 you need a computer to change the shooting mode.

In any head to head I've seen, the Drift looks like garbage. I can't remember if it was the 'HD Ghost' or the previous model though. I'd look into it before purchasing.

Of course, there's the Monoprice cam; which apparently has a build quality to match its $100 price. And it's on backorder. Still, I'd probably still get one of those before the Roam 2--at least you can change shooting modes in the field.

Cam people, *cough*Rick I*cough* any experiences or recommendations?

I know the GoPro is the 'gold standard' and has all the mounts; but what a dumb form factor. There's no way to unobtrusively mount the thing--and then you need the housing. If I wanted a hunk of polycarbonate hanging off my forehead I would have bought a helmet from Gath. ;)
