I currently have 7, 9, and 12m North Rebels and am trying to decide if i can get away with a 6m on 20m lines or if I should step down to a 5m.

depend on your weight and board used but 7-6m seems really close, I would go 5m to have no limit in the topend.. don't know latest version but 2011 and 2012 5m Rebel starts quite early

5m 7m 11m c-style work well for me... I don't seem to need a 9m but I bet it would work nice. The 5m to 7m seems like a small jump in size but it's not... seems to be good for me... plenty of diff... I max out quick with these kites tho. I would think 2m spread is the minimum spread unless you have tons of money and time. One meter spread would be to much overlap I would think... especially with an SLE ??

I have 5 2012 6 and 7 2013 78 kg north kontact 5.11
do not like much 5 rebel 2012 it needs steady strong wind otherwise I go some sinking some loosing in upwind.
maybe used 10 times ,last time april, when is around 30 and above is ok but with lulls and holes makes me struggling.
we could say ,obvious this size is made for high wind, but I found an enormous gap with 6 meters that I use with 18 19 knots until 32 33,no matter holes gusts lulls she goes through everything with big power
and total depower (it is my favourite kite)
found 5 too much" on off" also her tipycal rebel speed needs constant attention in waves ,allows few mistakes ,the washing machine is guarantee.
I am going to change with something less fast more drift ,maybe dice do not know at moment.
cannot say anything 2013 2014 models

You dont write anything about what you do or what you weigh ?
Waves or freestyle or ?
Assume it is waves, as most with TT's would never consider a 5m2 (unless you are extremely light weight)
Short answer:
If you got a "pull" kite like the Evo or similar, you have to choose 7 and 6m2 (and later get a 5m2), as the 7-5 change is too big when having a low windrange kite (EVERY low end grunt kite is a low windrange kite).
But with the Rebel, you should be able to get away with a 7 and 5m2 - because of the bigger windrange (the Evo lacks - but much better for heavier surfers)
