SoCal In October - Kite size, Strapless waveriding

Postby TooMuchEpoxy » Mon Sep 16, 2013 4:01 pm

Traveling to LA in October to visit some friends. Whats the wind like this time of year? Would it be worth it to bring a kite? If so, what size?

I exclusively ride strapless-wave. As far as my skill level I Gybe, tack, strapless air transition, east coast hurricane wave riding. I've been kiting 3 years and am confident in any conditions up to double oveahead(Kited the 12' peak of Sandy 2012). Haven't put a kite in the water in over a year.

I'd like to hit a wave spot and I don't want to step on anyone's toes. I know how I get when someone comes and visits my beach.

Advice?

Should I just leave the kite at home and surf?

Thanks in advance for the hospitality and advice.

Generally speaking Oct in LA is not great for wind. Probably not worth traveling with kites.

Absolutely not worth paying for your golf bag

Not sure where these two guys kite, but I had plenty of sessions in October
last year. Leo and C-Street. A couple of memorable sessions.

15 to 25 mph on the good days, however they are hard to forecast.

Welcome to the West Coast :D
Wind at that time of the year is either hit or miss. More important bring a wetsuit, water temp will be in the mid 60ies. Average kite size is 12 - 14. Swell and surf is normally good (espclly with a storm off of MX or S-Pacific). Surf swell is from the south, wind swell from the west ...

I don't know if it's worth dragging your gear from coast to coast. If it all fits into a golf bag, it might be worth it. If you have to pay extra for your SB then probably not. If your buddies have a SB, then you are lucky or make new friends on CL to find a cheap one. Couple of 'schools' are renting boards, me thinks they are around 40bucks a day.

Note: Kiting the surf is in Cali officially not permitted, but often tolerated at this time of the year.
Malibu, HB and Ventura has an aggressive local tribe protecting their turf, so use some common sense and find a local for some briefing.
The rest is pretty laid back.

peace
