If you are a fan of OR and wanted to stick with the brand, the Origin is a good board to learn on and for lighter days. I've got a few sessions in on it after borrowing one from the local school.

Personally, I had a plywood door made for me when I was learning. I still have that board. It cost me $270 for parts, labor, pads, straps, fins. Use Baltic birch if you do make one.
