Quick Release Harnesses- Self Release?

Postby William Munney » Mon Nov 04, 2013 1:06 am

I have a Cabrinha harness that's a couple of years old that has started to spontaneously release while kiting toeside- is this typical? The harness is still in good shape overall and there is no sand in the mechanism. It is also fully engaged at the start of the session.

Thanks

Yeah the same thing happened with my dakine renegade after 2 years or so, started popping off when I would ride toeside. Luckily the hold-down strap that goes through the spreader bar kept the kite from flying away.

I ended up getting a mystic harness, won't ever have this problem with the clickerbar.

Has anyone ever distorted a Mystic spreader bar, or otherwise done *something*, that's caused the clicker to release unexpectedly?

Yes, the spreader bar stayed attached to one side but with gloves on I was unable to put the harness back together with the kite flying and attached. Kind of a PITA. I'll check out Mystic.

Yep, it's not a huge deal, I always just sat down in the water and used a little muscle to get it hooked in again, definitely something i worried about though every time i went toeside

Can you show a picture of the locking device -

Is it a belt in a plastic or metal loop ? (I doubt it...)

Is it a clicker system ? (I assume since you write "mechanism")

Is it a "bend and hook" system ?

I've had my Mystic (quite strong metal clicker system) open once only, but pretty sure it was because a bit of sand has caused it to not be fully locked - so kind of my own fault and I check more carefully now :naughty:

The belt systems are of course the safest, and will not open accidentally.

The "bend" and put metal in metal has a bit of a risk that it can open/release, when riding toeside.
But because brands knows this, the new ones are better in this respect - but of course not as easy to mount/demount then

Not sure if this will work kind of new to the interwebs.

It's a spring loaded metal latch with a rectangular metal buckle that clicks in, however the spring is now rather weak. It was definitely fully engaged at the start of my session.

Aaah, yes, now I understand.

I havent used that model myself, but I think you are right - it can be prone to self releasing when it gets "softer" especially :(

Maybe others got a hint how to fix/prevent this ?

I see that they sell the spreader bar part for $68. But I think I will use an old Cabrinha spreader bar with no quick release as the webbing on the newer harness seems to be the same.
